1st timer doing something wrong. But, doesn't know what that is. (Photos)

I started my little project on Aug. 20th by planning some seeds that I had saved out of the better smoke that had come my way through the years. This is my first time to grow and I wanted to start out with bag seeds and soil. Invariably I knew I was going to mess something up and I wanted that mess up to be with bag seeds and soil and not seed bank stock and hydro.

But, I’ve run in to a problem that I can’t quite find a direct answer for.

Here’s a timeline as to what all has been done and when. And yes, I know that there are several things that are not in the correct order (got impatient) and several things missing from my supply list (very short on funds).

Would someone with some experience be so kind as to look my stuff over and guide me back to the correct path?

Aug. 20: Bag-seeds from great pot got planted in MG potting soil in small clay pots. I noticed that the clay pots were leaching out the nutrients due to a funky yellow buildup on the outside of the pots.

Aug. 28/31-ish: All but a few have sprouted and had embryonic leaves.

Sept. 10: (up to this point the seedlings resided in my kitchen under some track lights and would be taken outside for more light) I purchased a Sun System Yield Master II 400w HPS with a color corrected EYE Hortilux bulb. I wanted the Son Agra bulb that I had read about but the hydro shop was out of them that day. Set up the light and moved all of my plants (11 at the time) in their little yellow crusted pots in to a storage facility that now doubles as my grow room and put the light four feet above the tops. Had problems with them falling over, so I staked them and all was well. Lighting schedule was/is 20/4. The four hours off is during the hottest part of the day. Their room is stuffy, and not climate controlled. Ventilation & filtration is next on the to-do list.

Sept: 11: From here on out I’ve been lowering that light closer to the plants each day… The light is also equipped with an Equalizer Diffuser… Which I’m kind of thinking was nothing more than me falling pray to something that looked cool.

Sept. 14: by now they were getting a bit too large for those small pots and having to deal with the stakes was a pain in the ass. So, I picked the best looking six plants and transferred them to 8 inch plastic pots using MG Moisture control & Perlite. (one bag of Perlite mixed in with two 32 quart bags of MG-MC) and gave them a good watering both at the top and bottom of the pot. Also, I planted them as deep as I could as a natural way to keep from having to stake them again anytime soon. Stopped lowering the light for two days to keep all their variables from changing at once.

Sept. 20: remembering how fast those little pots would dry up, I cut some eight inch circles out of some left over panda film and placed it over the soil white side up for reflection as well. Lighting by now, depending on whether you’re looking at the taller ones or shorter ones is around two feet off the tops of the plants. Not sure if that’s too close or not… I’ve read 3 to 4 feet… But, I’ve got a fan going and when I was at the hydro shop they had a 400w HPS over some tomatoes that was less than a foot off the plant. Plus, don’t forget about my handy-dandy diffuser.

Sept. 21: Three of the six plans have started to droop in a disturbing way while the other three look somewhat alright.

I’m confused about that droop… To begin with, is that a bad thing? I always fear the worse, so I guessed ‘yes’. But, now knowing exactly which changed variable is the cause, I didn’t want to water more and have it be an over watering problem to start with… Not sure if the panda-film and it reflecting the light upward under the plants is it. I can’t figure out why it’s only happening to three of them… And it’s happening on some of the weakest and some of the strongest. There’s no real pattern.

My best guess would be that MG-MC and my heavy hand have over watered them then trapped the moisture in with that panda-film. My second guess would be the panda-film’s upward reflection is freaking the plants out. But, I don’t want to try and correct something only to correct the wrong thing and make it worse.

Has anyone seen this and if so, what should I do?

Thanks for taking a look.

Oh, one last bit of info. That HPS and my camera don’t like each other at all. So, I color corrected the photos a little bit. When not under that HPS, they are a very vibrant green. Six photos, three droopy plants and three somewhat normal plants.

Forgot to add one thing... Nutes, I started adding a very weak MG plant food mix to the water when I saw that it was leaching out through the clay pots then stopped when I read the dangers of too much. They've been on bottled reverse osmosis water from then on out.

my guess is that you don't have enough oxygen getting to your roots, try mixing in a small amount of H2O2 to your nutes when watering them
