1st Pro200 Grow [bagseed], a few Q's,+ pics

My first grow of any kind, and I could not have done it w/out this forum. So I've got 5 plants going, planted into the pods on 2/3 (~3 weeks). I read as much as I could on here before starting, and proceeded as follows:

1. Germinated in paper towels about 20 seeds, a mix of fairly recent seeds and seeds probably over 2 years old, all bagseed. Picked the best of the litter after they germed and planted 7. 2 did not grow after podding them, so I pulled them.

2. Kept a 24/0 schedule for the first 2 weeks. No nutes. Used distilled water, monitored with a PH meter, trying to keep it to about 6, although I think my meter is innacurate. Installed 2 2-inch circular bubblers, as seen in pics, to give some extra oxygen.

3. About a week ago, I flushed the resevoir, put fresh PH'd water in, and changed the schedule to 18/6. Put 1 small nute (stock) in, dissolved in water.

4. Yesterday, re-arraigned the plants for optimal spacing per their growth.

I have a couple of questions.
  • 1. First, I've got one pod that has two plants growing outof it. Don't know how it happened, but it's there. The dominant plant is the biggest and healthiest of all 5 pods. The runt plant is growing, but small and under the shadow of it's twin. Any idea what I should do with it? Let it keep growing? What are the consequences?
  • 2. A day or so before I switch to the 18/6 schedule, I started noticing leaves yelllowing/slightly browning. This was consistent across all the plants. I cut those leaves off. Since then, the plants have grown, and the new set of leaves (is node the word for this?) above them have done the same thing. What is this likely due to? I have tried to keep the PH correct, with PH Downer, and I have not fed them too much nutes from what I have read. Should I worry? Roots look fine, no mold/rot that I can see.
  • 3. Lastly, I wanted to install extra lights. So today I bought a 23W cool white outdoor flourescent floodlamp. At 3 weeks, is this a proper bulb? I have it aimed at the front of the aerogrow, aiming slightly downward.
I now the grow area is not perfect, and I need to do something with the crinkled alum. foil (I'm setup in a shower stall with a glass sliding door)....but any opinions? First post - thanks for all the great info that I have gleaned from this site.

Also, as a follow-up, at what point (if any) should I pull 1 or two of the plants? With 5, they are already very much overlapping each other (the pics are 4 days old). Even with the additional light, I'm a bit afraid that they will not get all the light they need. Should I reduce down to 4 or 3? Also, anyone have a thread where pod placement is discussed? Like where to arrange the plants for optimal growth?

Well if you can, you could keep the best ones and try your look, i would keep 4, thats a good 50/50 female ratio, cant go wrong with with that. Next, i think that light is ok, you should look into Daylight CFL's for vegging, and Soft White for flowering. that looks more like a deficiency then a nute burn, i'll have to look into it after this post. people swear not to go foil, but i personally dont thinks its bad, but i dont reconmend it. I dont think the placng of the plants matter, they all grow at there own rate.

here a good thread to take a look at

Daylight for vegging? I read everything I could find and I thought if you had to use CFL's, you wanted soft white for vegging and daylight for flowering. Arg. Now I'm more confused.

I also just don't know what to do about the twins. I don't know if I should rip the pod apart, try and seperate them, then replant the large one or what? It's strange because even though they are twins, and you'd think they'd suffer, the larger twin is the largest of any of the plants by a good 15%.

[edit] Yeah, I've been following that thread. Helped me out in the beginning. Can't believe I missed that. Thanks for the tip. I'll get a daylight one and save the cool white for a few weeks when I start to flower.

I'm also wondering, if I pull a plant or two, which ones I pull. I know I don't neccessarily want the tallest/bushiest to survice, since that just might be a strain that stretches and will be a jack-in-the-beanstalk plant. The mix of seeds I used could mean the shorter ones are simply strains that are meant for indoors.

On the plus side, I'm starting to get a beautiful stink when I open my bathroom to check on my babies. Can't wait. :weed: [/edit]

OK, so an update and progress report here. The first pics are from 2/18 and It's amazing what more light will do for ya in less than 10 days. As soon as I got some replies, I pulled the twin that was growing on the dominant plant. Then I went out and bought some lights the same day. I added (1) 200W (Equiv.) CFL to light from the high front, (2) 100W (Equiv.) CFL's lighting from the side, and (1) 100W (Equiv.) CFL sitting on the table to give light from the lower front. I made sure to get 6500k daylight bulbs.

I'm 25 days from planting, and 12 days into vegging. My oh my, do they grow fast. I can't believe the difference in 10 days. To help with the bad grow environment (shower stall), I removed the tinfoil and added 2 reflective car dashboard sunlight reflectors, 1 for the rear, and 1 for the front.

The yellowish leaves are gone, I suspect the res flush just took a while to show, and I've upped my nute feeding schedule a bit. The 5 plants seem to like it. The light white spots on some of the lower leaves are from a nute feeding where I dissolved 1/2 small tab, then mist-sprayed it on the plants. They seemed to like it, but other than light, I'm just nuting the regular way.

I'm really starting to think there won't be enough room for 5 plants for the final 2 weeks of veggings and up until the point where I can tell the sex, but I just don't know what plant to pull. It appears some of the plants are indoor low-growing strains, while 2 others are dwarfing them. I'm just trying to get enough light for all of them.

And keep the neighbors in the condo next door from smelling this dank shit. My wife is soooo pissed at me for growing. Although she's already called dibs on the first bud. WTF?!?:wall:

I don't know, that's kinda what I was hoping to hear a suggestion on. I've read to flower then they are 10-12", at about 4 weeks of vegging. Think that's too much? They are growing real nice. Input much appreciated! The sooner my wife can smoke this shit my sooner my life is happier. :)

haha well, the plants will almost triple in size, so you can jus calculate that into how much space you have to grow

Vertical space isn't in issue, and I know they will triple in size. I can suspend the hood from the shower nozzle, and the table the aerogarden is on is height-adjustable.

I just don't know how soon I can flower without hurting the end result. This is my first grow of any kind, so I'm kinda just going by what i've read here and feedback (from mainly you, hah!) Can I flower sooner than 4 weeks into vegging without a bad result? I just worry if I go that long, with 5 plants, it will be WAY too crowded.

Yea, what happens if you tried to flower early? Like even a seedling like his first pics? would it work? That would be a fun thread to watch....A super mini micro grow! 2 100W eq CFLS, grow for two weekks then flower with the warm light 2 100 cfls! 3 months for one tiny nug, imagine all the bashing!!! What if somebody did it outside late in the summer? would it be the same way or just die? Anybody Know?

Looking at my setup, does anyone think I will need more than the 42w+[3x 23W] + Aerogrow CFL lights when I switch to flowering? Or is what I have sufficient?
more light the better. especially in flowering. you'll want at least a few more 2700k(soft white) 23w. why not? they are cheap and will make a huge difference. more light the better! :leaf:

The issue is fixtures, mainly. I planned on switching all the bulbs over to soft white when the time comes, possibly keep one daylight so there is full spectrum light. And it's possible that I could add 1 more bulb without some extensive rewiring. But beyond that, it's going to be quite a project electrically. I already have one bare bulb socket->outlet adaptor, I'm trying not to start a fire, ya know? :fire:
I just wanted realistic feedback on flowering, assuming (for the moment) that 3 of the 5 plants are female.

Lumen wise, I have 4680 lumens (aerogrow lights) + 2700 lumens (200W) + 1700x3 lumens (100w) = 12,480 total.

So thats 300 watts, so thats Kw/ 3 hrs.......so its gonna cost you about...... $1.16 per day veg and about $.60 per day in flower.....so whatever you yeild will end up costing about $77 in power alone over three months. I wonder if the AG would at least produce a half o of good per plant?

An interesting question, considering I've added another 23W light. Your math is actually off a bit. With 4 100W equivilant builbs, the aerogrow lights, and 2 200W lights, The CFL equivilant is only 218 watts. But still, it brings up the question of cost vs. reward.

I figure I've spend about $350 between the Aerogrow, the lights, fixtures, a "grow box", pump and PH solution, etc. A good 1/8 here goes for $40 at least, and killer dank goes for $25/gram. If I could get 1 ounce total of of all the plants, that would equal more than 1 o of decent stuff bought in 1/8ths.

Anyways, I'm AMAZED at how fast these things are growing. I started the flowering cycle 5 days ago following a 36 hour dark period, and the plants have grown from 7" to 12". They seem to average about an inch per day. Is this typical?

I'm not using foil. If you look at my setup in the second pictures I'm using car window reflectors.
