1st Aerogarden Grow Test - " take 2 " - MDANZIG BLUE STREAK HYBRID - journal

Ok this is try 2. First plant was a boy and had to go today. but that's ok because I did it all wrong, and it showed in the plant.

I am new to the Aerogarden myself. I just started my first test grow in a Aerogarden. I am trying 1 plant (blue streak hybrid) in the center front spot. I put golf balls over the other holes to block the light from the roots, and I am using fox farm nuts (I have done a lot of homework on nuts and everybody likes FF nuts for hydro). But like I said I am just getting started, and I need to get through my first test grow. I would like to take this plant to full term in the Aerogarden if I can. The goal is to get 3 plants to go 4 to 5 weeks in the Aerogarden then transplant to a small booth (booth not done yet need $$ for parts) till harvest (space is very limited and so is the budget). I am pretty focused on the auto flowering hybrids (most running 12 week life, 6 week growth, and 6 week flower) and will be using fem'ed seeds when I can.

Let me start with setup. I have a pro 100 with a small fan on 1 side (very lightly fanning the plant leaves with air),A "GlowPanal" LED light panel on the other side (fan and LED's switch sides every 24 hour),and AG hood at lowest setting. The blue streak hybrid is only a 2.5ft plant. I should say at this point I had not done much research on line (just for nuts ), and hadn't put much thought into ph. A plant needs water, light ,and air "bingo" your good to go right. Man I just didn't know. I should also add that I have no choice but to use tap water or rain water ( we are now collecting rain water ). I'm in the south east tropics. We have high humid and it rains every day at about 4pm. But for now we are using ph corrected tap water. We are trying to Keep it just below 6.0 Also getting bottled water to me is to costly. I was able to get a ph test kit at a pet shop the other day. It came with ph up and ph down. I calibrated a 2L soda bottle 3 drops at a time with ph down until it was at a ph just below 6.0 (24 drops of ph down to a 2L soda bottle of tap water), and tests show this is repeatable. So I can say the tap water is consistent. We can also assume that I have learned my lesson on the amount of consideration that should be placed on ph as this is take 2. Like I said that first plant looked like shit at the end. As far as nuts go this time. I was thinking 1 cap full of FF big bloom at 2 weeks. Then increase later. I know 2 caps = 1 tbls. So that's the set up

week 0 day 1;
Clean and fill AG with ph corrected tap water. Put golf balls in place, and 1 AG basket with grow sponge in the center front spot. I let the sponge get wet. the sponge has a small cupped out middle. So I pocked a toothpick down in a little ways and put a seed in point down with the top of the seed flush with the bottom of the cupped out middle. Here we go. May luck be a lady tonight

sweet what Watt is your LED i got same brand glow panal, mine is 14 watt. Im going to start my grow soon.

Hi gom, welcome!

Read the FAQ's. There's a lot of useful information in there for us AG growers.

A few things that popped out: If you have the seeds to do it, start with more than one plant incase you run into that same problem and end up with a male.
Also, germinate in a paper towel and not in the AG. Put seeds in a damp paper towel, put the damp paper towel with the seeds in it, in between two paper plates and wrap with saran wrap, then put in high cabinet. Wait 48 hours and don't peak until 48 hours has past.
Plant the sprouted seeds in the AG sponge. It typically takes 4-7 days to get a sprout in the AG. This way you'll only have to wait 2!.

Other than that, make sure you read the FAQ's and the other thread at the top of this section. It will give you a list of things you will need to buy to make your grow a successful.

The Blue Streak Hybrid last time I checked was a 8 to 10$ seed. At this time even my seeds are donated to me (My family is skipping lunch 3 days this week so I could get the ph kit). Even the Aerogarden and growpanal were a gift and came from the same friend with the seeds. So for now it will be a 1 seed at a time test (with fingers crossed) until we can show repeatable success at growing the dam thing. From what I can remember the BS Hybrid is only just now becoming available 100% stable. The seeds we have are a much older batch (We got a deal). they are in no way 100% stable. We will probably have to pull some tricks at the end of 6 weeks if they don't start doing that auto-flowering thing. Sorry my point there started out to be that now that they have this available. 100% auto-flowering. It won't be long, and you will see it available in fem'ed seeds. As I had said the final goal is to get 3 BS plants to grow in a AG for 5 to 6 weeks and then they will be moved for flowering. When we get that far we will be using fem'ed seeds. but for now we are still just testing. Also looking over garage sales for a air pump and air stone CHEEP. Would love to add that some day soon. Yes this is a no money grow op here.

Ok its been 24 hours and I just got a good look at the seed. It has cracked and is showing 1/8 inch if sprout. Not a bad start. I rolled that little sprout back down into the hole I made, and placed the dark humidity cover back on. I'm just using the humidity cover that comes with the AG, and I placed a dark folded cloth over that. To block light. I would think in 2 days or so it should start popping up. I will keep it covered till then

Week 0 Day 3; (80F Ph5.9 Humidity 86%)

Well I'm not even going to look. I know there is nothing to see yet. But there should be tomorrow. But I do have a question. Whats the deal with LED,s? I spent some time online looking around and I guise by the postings that there was a big debate as to whether they work or not. I can see now that they do in fact work. We have peeps here in this form. That are doing it with a AG and 1 UFO 90W, and he's got the bud to prove it works. So my question is what is the difference between the generations of technology? I was on Ebay last night looking at them, The only thing I could tell is it looked like in the square panel's the LED's were bigger (10mm) and the watts went to 50. Instead of the 14 and 28. As far as the UFO's I cant tell what changed they all look the same? Anybody know what they are changing? I'm sure the technology is improving.

Seed is starting to push up. Should be able to see roots coming out of the bottom in the next day or two. We will go one more day of total darkness.

Ok. Had to start over seed died and don't know why. So here we are "take 3", and things are going good. I'm on week 1 day 6. I have 1.25" plant with very full three leaves, and a good start on the first set of five leaves. I did a rinse and repete from "take 2" to get me to this point.

Week 1 Day 6; (78F Ph5.8 Humidity 65%)

BIG day for sprout. First full water change, and first dose of nuts. Here we go.

I have taken a 2 liter soda bottle and added 1 cap full of FoxFarm's big bloom(2 caps = 1 tbls). Then fill with ph correct water. I do this 2 days in advance to give the nuts time to dissolve real good. It takes one and a half bottles to fill a AG. Giving you a half bottle left over to top off with later.

I have also started folio feeding. To do this I have taken 1/4 liter of the half bottle of FF mix that I had left over, and 1/4 liter of ph correct water. I filter it through a coffee filter into a hand mister. I will mist once a day in the morning with this and mist with straight ph correct water through out the day.

I have also added 2 air stones, air pump, and regulator to lightly add bubbles to the tank.

Next I will start adding LED's.

Week 2 Day 1; (77F Ph5.8 Humidity 62%)

Ok. Be careful if you plan to folio feed your plants. A little is a lot. When I first did it. The response was so fast and so positive. I just thought I would giver a couple more squirts. Bad idea. My nice green sprout has some yellowing to the leaves now. No more folio feeding for a couple days. Other than that sprout looks real good, and DAM she is growing like a weed. Her first set of five leaves filled out real nice today.

I also decided to force flowering. So I shut down all light today. For 48 hours. I have read that this can trigger flowering in the auto-flowering plants and the blue streak is not 100% stable yet, so I thought I would give it a try. It will be back to full 24 hour on in two days. If there is any info you guys can give me on the auto-flowering plants, or if I am doing something wrong please YELL at me and set me straight.

Also SICC jazz ,and Da420 just want you all to know I'm a big fan. I am slowly but surely going through all your grows. Hell I only made it this far because of what I read in this form. I didn't know shit when I started this. So thanks a bunch guys you all have helped a lot without even knowing you were. Let me know if you think I should be doing something, or change something

The powers that be said I could get what I need to make this work. So she gave me some money. I am adding a 50W tri band UFO light to the AG hood. I have the old 2 bulb hood with the 2 round old style bulbs. It looks like I can fit it in between the 2 bulbs (50W UFO is just under 7" diameter), with a little cobbling. That would put it right over my plant, and should be no problem to wire it right into the AG. I think. Maybe. Chit who knows. We will see when it gets here. I was looking at the 90W but man that thing is big and bad ass but its big. I also have a growpanel45 on order. I will get two just don't have the funds to get the second one yet. I had two 14W growpanel's on it till today. They were a friends, and he germed some seeds this weekend. Well dam if he didn't want his lights back when they popped up. LOL That's ok though. The two I'm gettin are 28W each. I should have a ton of light, and I should have it coming from all sides. Hope its enough

Week 2 Day 1; (78F Ph5.9 Humidity 63%)

Well I screwed the pooch on that one. The AG will allow you to turn the light off and keep the pump going. However the light comes back on in the morning, and stays on. So tonight I will unplug it. We will go 48 hours of total dark from there. I just need to get 10% smarter than this thing and I should get something good out of it.

Anyways Sprout is looking great. The leaves that got the over folio feeding are still a little yellow. But the leaves that are new growth are nice and green. Also the roots look great. Nice and white and waving gently in the flow the air bubbles make. She is still pretty short only 1.5" now. But the three leaves are 4" across, and the new first set of five leaves are over 3" already. I did have two 14W panel LED's on her till last night. I hope my new LED's get here soon. Man she is going to be short. From what I read she is only going to go 2' to 2.5'. She is going to be a big fat bud on a stick at the end I think? We will see.

and thank god you are lol. Dude dam glade to see you there. I am a big fan. The first time I logged on to rollitup(I was having problems of coarse). I read Jazzes grow thread and when you told him to check his ph. I ran out and got a ph tester. Yep mine was way off. That was my biggest problem at that point. I think. But any ways. I have been trying to go through all your threads. I started your first 400W grow the other night. Got as far as you having 1 plant left I think, and you were going to start over. I am sure that grow is probably over. But don't tell me how it ends. I hope to finish reading it this weekend.

So I'll be bringing everything up to date here in a bit. Just got to get some coffee in me. Feel free to let me know what ya think. Your input is always welcome, and appreciated.

Ok 36 hours into total darkness. That should do it. After all it is a auto plant and we are just trying to trigger it a little early. So wakie wakie little sprout.

AG Status Change; "Super Grow" Light 24/0 (AG hood & 50W LED UFO) Water & Air 24/0

Sprout looks good. Still have some yellowing on the 3 leaves. But the first set of 5 leaves are nice and full and green. A good 4" across now. Looking a little droopy but all in all looking good. I gave her a little folio feed. 3 pumps from a small atomizing pump bottle.

At this point I did a full water change. The AG Pro 100 reservoir top will free stand on the counter. So I put a small cup of ph correct rain water(using filtered rain water now that I have a good supply) under it to suspend the roots in. I put this in a safe place. I scrub the reservoir with dish soap and rinse very well. I fill the AG with ph correct rain water and 1 cap full FF big bloom nuts to 2 liter bottle.

Now I have the AG all back together. Air pump is going, and I got the UFO in the mail today what timing. I have hung the UFO in front of the AG pointing in on the little girl like she is on a stage and it's her spot light. Wow that's alot of light. Is there such a thing as to much light? I still have a 28W growpanel coming.

I have been spraying sprout all day with ph correct rain water. When I saw that she was dry. She has perked right up and looks very happy right now.
