150w Cfl, Purple d & Sour d, Flowering from Aug 29, Yellow Leaves Normal?

Hey everyone,

This is my first grow and first journal, so bear with me please!

If you have time for a quick response, I would love to know if the yellowing of the bottom leaves on my two plants is normal at this stage, or if I should be changing something in my nutes, watering, light, etc. Thanks in advance!

Background:
I obtained two clones (a purple diesel and a sour diesel) on Aug 8, 2010, at ~6" tall. After 3 weeks of vegging (18/6) under two 24w T5s (6500K) + two 24w cfls (2700K), I switched to flowering (12/12) on Aug 29, replacing the 2700Ks with 6500Ks T5s and added two more 24w cfls, for a total of about 150w.

Setup:
- the two plants are in one smallish walk-in closet
- 2 T5s (24w, 2700K) above, each from a "JumpStart" kit
- 4 clfs (24w, 2700K) on the sides, 2-3 inches from the biggest bud sites
- No intake/outtake or carbon filter, just a small oscillating fan inside the closet
- For odor control, I have an ONA jar in the closet, and a self-spraying Lysol outside, seems to work alright (unless someone opens the closet door!)
- I keep the closet door closed most of the day, but the windows in the room open
- Feeding 2-3 milliliters of dyna-grow (NPK 3-12-6) every water, which is every 3 days.

Pictures:

As you can see, the buds are looking pretty nice -- not huge, but it's my first grow, so I'm not too concerned about that. My concern is the bottom leaves that are yellowing and dying.

Question of the day:
Is it normal for a few (3-4) of the bottom leaves to turn yellow and die at this stage?

I figure I have about ~4 weeks to go on the Purple D and ~6 weeks on the Sour D... My guess is that I might be overfeeding them. Since flowering, I've been adding about 2-3 milliliters of dyna-grow (NPK 3-12-6) every water (every 3 days). I pour a 1/4 gallon of nuted water (PH approx 6.5), and let the excess drain off. Not sure if the yellow/dying leaves just means the plant redirecting its energy to the buds, or if I'm doing something wrong...

Suggestions or comments of any kind would be very welcome! Thanks, and happy growing!

man, your plants are looking might ybeautiful... i wish i had a way to obtain clones... guess im gonna have to get a mother going right...lol... but anyways, yeah man, it is perfectly normal for your fan leaves to yellow... they will actually begin to get dark brown and fall off... i would leave them on until they fall off though...the leafis sorta like a battery.. its still able to produce and absorb energy and light for the plant until it is dead, just not as much of the stuff because it is not "as alive" as the pretty green ones... i, from previous experience only, feel that by pulling majority of fan leaves will actually help to dwarf your plant... not really something you should try doing with yours given you have suffecient flowering space... if you didnt, i would def say to pull the leaf now... i dont know how much of that made sense due to me being akwardly stoned after smoking spme supa sour kush and eating some time released morphine for my back... anyways, not a good combination as far as getting your brain to work right...lol... like i said mane, your plants look wonderful...

p.s. ur right... it is redirecting its energy to the buds... from here on out, itll be a fun ride... be sure to take piks everyday... even if you dont post them, you will wanna look back and watch it become a beautiful plant from beggining to end... or at least i did...

hope this post helps...

Many plants yellow on the bottom. My friend whom is a legal grow always has that happening. Eventually they will just sag, and even maybe fall off. He still got all of his bud. Don't worry about it :)

Hey micro, thanks a lot for the response. Really appreciate it.

I just wasn't sure if it was a sign that I was underwatering or overfeeding or something, since there's still 4-6 weeks of flowering to go. But I'll be patient. And I'll definitely keep taking pictures (maybe not every day, but every other day) and post them up.

here's what i originally wanted to do, a chronological set of pictures of each of the two plants. there are a few gaps here and there, but i think they paint a nice picture of each plant's progression...

first, the purple diesel clone, adopted 8/8 in a little 2-inch cube. transplanted the next day to what i think is a 1/2 gallon bucket that drains.

8/12 p_aug12.x2.jpg

8/29 switched to 12/12

8/30 p_aug30.jpg first day of flowering (12/12)

9/9 p_sep09.jpg first signs of bud sites, very exciting

9/10 p_sep10.jpg p_sep10.x2.jpg definitely bud sites

9/11 p_sep11.jpg 2 weeks flowering, early bud

9/13 p_sep13.jpg p_sep13.x2.jpg p_sep13.x3.jpgthey grow up so fast

9/14 p_sep14.jpg p_sep14.x2.jpg

next few pictures under normal lighting, hence the bluer tint...

9/17 p_sep17.jpg p_sep17.x2.jpg nice aerial views, 10-15 solid buds

9/17 p_sep17.x3.jpg close up

this is where i'm at right now:

9/20p_sep20.jpg p_sep20.x2.jpg p_sep20.x3.jpg

buds are looking great, although keeping on eye on the bottom leaves...

9/20 p_sep20.x4.jpg p_sep20.x5.jpg

must be the lack of light, and probably nothing to worry about?

this took waaaay longer to do than i thought it would. holy crap.

any comments would be awesome. the sour diesel chronology will come soon...

haha you're like four weeks behind me, just wait, i thought i was nearly done but the buds just keep getting fatter and fatter, u got a bit longer to go id say but im on my first as well, given clones as well. those lower leaves dyin look like mine, i think its just lack of light penetration from florescants, youll notice where the light defficient areas are later when some buds just aren't keeping up with the higher ones, looks good, but start thinkin about ventillation now if you're worried about stink

cool feirefiz, just checked out your grow. looks amazing.

i am kind of worried about the stink on these... the problem is i can't cut any holes in the walls/ceiling/doors to create an exhaust. inside the closet where the plants are, i have a small oscillating fan and a half-open ona jar. outside, i have a once-every-9-minutes self-spraying lysol can, a large oscillating fan, and the windows open (with a bug screen).

this has been working quite well, but you're saying it's gonna get MUCH stinkier?

here's my purple diesel:
p_sep23.jpg

and my sour diesel:
s_sep23.jpg

bottom leaves are still falling off, about 2 or 3 per day. i'm upping the nitrogen in my feeds, hopefully that'll help.

is it generally better to keep the in-closet fan going 24 hours? i currently have it locked with the 12/12 timer...

man, i hope you get a pound. that plant is a monster!

what do you recommend for upping magnesium? both my nute bottles only have 0.5% magnesium, so not that much i guess.

here are my girls. still having some foliage problems (yellowing and drooping leaves), but the buds are ripening quite nicely.

here's the purple diesel:

here are some pictures of the two plants at 4 1/2 weeks flowering. the biggest buds are about half the size of my thumb. will they keep growing?

looks almost ready, doesn't she?

(Also posted in the "plant problems" forum)

Can anyone tell me what these leaf problems might be due to?

yellow leaves & brown spots:

yellow tips everywhere, even near the bud sites:
View attachment 1189530View attachment 1189534

I suspect a magnesium deficiency and/or root bounding (they're in 1-gallon pots with good drainage)... I'm feeding with 1-2 ml of dyna-gro every 6 days, just ph'ed water in between.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
