1200 watts is nothing, its like $35 extra a month for me. Your gonna have to get into the 5000 watt plus category to raise ANY eyebrows. About the only way you can get in trouble is by not paying your power bill.

hey Ganja85, it really depends on where you are at and local/state/fed focus on that sort of thing whether you need to be overly concerned about it...in Colorado there may be medicinal providers running multi thouie HID's in resi homes that have remained under the radar for years-regardless it is prudent to be careful so first off check your usage historicals through the local provider & manage your usage increases accordingly...any electric appliance comes with wattage/usage amounts - figure yours out and reduce where you can....easiest strategy is to camo your usage and with two 600's it's pretty easy if you're willing to put in some extra work; stop using hair dryers in the summer, put a sweater on in the winter, shut off the dry cycle on the dish washer, hang your clothes on a line to dry & the difference between where you are at now and running 1200w at 12 by 7 will be minimal...another albeit potentially cost prohibitive option is to look to high usage appliances visible from the outside like window AC's, hot tubs etc. don't use them but have them - calc their usage & determine the difference in your increase. this wouldn't pass any more then the look/logical test if the jackboots want to kick your door in but any edge you can create on a probable cause defense helps -

Not that you need too. But you can just convert all your inside house lighting to CFL's and get rid of any light inside and outside
light that can't take cfl's like outdoor floodlights and stuff if you're really concerned. That will pretty much level the usage to the same as you had before. If not less.

You don't have to go around doing all kinds of things manually for just 1200. That's no big deal at all.

Look at your bill and see what your current monthly use is total, it's probably many times that especially if you have whole house a/c and things most people have and run every day.
With the relatively large size house you have 1200 will probably only make a tiny change in your bill.

Quadruple that and then you need to go to special lengths like posted by troutbum.

a general rule of thumb is 1000 watts per bedroom in the house, like a 3 bedroom could run 3-4 1000 watt lights and still be under the radar, other things you can do is add a gas stove if yours is electric, gas water heater and gas dryer, but with 1200 watts its really not nessasary
