12/12 from start? First time grower.

I'm getting ready to grow some bagseed that I got. I'm going to be growing inside a homemade PC grow box with ~20" high x ~18 long x ~9" wide. I was wondering how should I keep the plants from getting to tall and outgrowing the PC box. Should I just put them in 12/12 from the start, or veg them for a little bit. Any tips will help! :hump:

i'd start out on 18/6. i've never done a pc grow but i mean you can LST and stuff to keep the plants short. maybe since space is an issue just veg for 2 weeks? you won't have too great of a yield but that'll keep it short for sure.. keep in mind once you switch to flowering your plants usually double or triple in size.. just check out some of the threads they have on topping/cropping/lst/ and so on. you'll find a lot of useful info good luck with your grow.

Yeah, I plan on topping/supercropping and lst but I'm just afraid they will outgrow the grow box. I was also thinking the same thing, veg for 2 or 3 weeks and then switch to 12/12.

have you already bought/built your pc grow box? if you haven't you should look into a mini fridge grow box.. i've been following a guys mini fridge hydroponic grow with 2 plants and it looks amazing..he did have some trouble with heating issues though. it was his first grow as well.
like we both said before, i think 18/6 would be best for 2 weeks, maybe 3 weeks depending on the strain and how big the plants get. i don't know what would happen if you put them on 12/12 right from the start, it seems to me it would just slow growth down or may not be sufficient light at all, it'd make more sense to me to start it out at 16/8 or even 24/0 for a couple weeks that way you save a little time. hopefully a more exp grower will comment because now i'm curious myself about starting out at 12/12..

i just read a thread on the same topic on a different website to get a little insight... mixed reviews. some ppl said it was not recommended, and others said it was a good idea. quote - "The goal of the indoor grower is to replicate the plant's natural environment, a key point many professional growers often overlook in their quest for everything bigger, better, faster, etc.

12/12 from seed has many benefits, such as higher female ratios (reported by numerous growers upon switching to 12/12, and that being the only variable changed)

Also, the plants root structures are able to develop much more thoroughly during the dark period. There are also numerous reactions that occur in plants only during times of darkness.

Yes, 24 hour lighting may produce growth "faster," but not always better. 24 hour lighting can and often does cause plants some stress, as does the sudden switch to 12/12 when one is ready to flower. With 12/12 from seed, the plant experiences the same light its entire life, experiences no stress in changing its environment, and flowers automatically, whenever the plant is ready. This is important.

By using 12/12 from seed, your plants will enjoi a healthier life, the natural way, while you save on your electricity bill.

This would be an excellent sticky, as there seems to be little awareness of the 12/12 experience!

Peace!"

since it's bagseed i say go for it and see what happens. be sure to post a journal if you do it, i'd definitely watch :)

I have looked at mini-fridge grows, but I'm pretty much done building the PC box so maybe some time in the future I would look into growing in a mini-fridge. But thank you for the advise. :bigjoint:

Well, I may be doing two PC boxes. Depends on if I can get ahold of another pc big enough. Might have to experiment with each of the boxes. Put one on 12/12 from seed, and the other box veg for a couple weeks, then compare the outcomes

i wish this was the case but unfortunately its not. in fact, if you plan to try to force the plant to flower before its sexually mature it causes high amounts of stress and is more likely to turn hermie. but a lot of people grow 12/12 from seed and they get females. they will grow about 1'-2' tall so you should definitely do some pruning so they stay within your allotted space. im actually in the middle of a 12/12 from seed grow, id wait until they are a few inches tall then flip the lights to 12/12. :peace:

PC grow boxes don't really work well enough, too compact and stuffy even with the mini fans. if you're going to grow something worthy, head up the ladder a bit, try a stealthy home made armoire, or a cupboard, you'll yield more and you'll also gain better understanding for the next grows.

12/12 from seed has and does work for me. I read from several sources that it works, and some dwarf strains recommend it. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be better to leave 18/6 for 2 weeks or so tho... Prolly better to just do that and LST, especially for a PC grow box
