10.0 Uvb Light

i think you are missing some thing but stop the light if its not working for you

i have had good results but mine moves around the room
mine was static no light mover what could i be missing and i had no light leaks yet hermies all over and was it too close even though it was a 26w cfl 10.0 uvb

moodster had you grown that strain from that breeder before? Did you have plants from that strain/breeder flowering away from the UVB in the same grow?

Just want to rule out bad genetics and to see if the plants flower properly away from the UVB under otherwise identical conditions.

well i had some discoloring from having the light 2 close thats why i move it every 6 hours. i think they got sun burn. but no no hermies.

how many clones did you take? do you still got the mother? have you grown this befor? how many times have you grown it?

if you got some more clones then grow with out the uvb if you dont get seeds then their you go. if you do then i would invest in some good seeds

yes m8 i think it was the seeds!! i got the seed from ahermie plant and i think i grew a hermie as ive got a lot of seeds even from my female hash plant bad genes im guessing it was master kush from DP i will try the uvb light out again in my next grow and let you al know what happens thanks everyone

Some of the bud were touching the UVB light.
The cola's were about 12 inches away from the UVB light

I'm thinking that also.
The strain of the plant probly has something do with
the amount of trichomes produced by the UVB light.
But heres the thing to think about. The Garden Green Plant
was really kick ass. I don't know if the UVB light might of had
something to do with it. It sorta makes sense when you thnk about it.
If a strain is ust to UV from the sun, then us adding a UVB light is probly
no big deal for a strain that has adapted to higher UV light.
I'm think that you'll see the best results from a strain that doesn't have
that UV trait. So when you add a UVB light the plant probly reacts to all this extra UVB light that it isn't ust to and goes nuts with trichomes.

The help I've received on the ballast question for mercury vapors hasn't been great.

I am going to take a guess that a HPS ballast will work for <1kW mercury lamps and that you need an ignitor for >1kW.

I've discovered some interesting facts regarding mercury vapors and their cost compared to fluoros. For example, one 400w Supratech MV outputs 7 times one 30w 10.0 reptile, but costs about the same to buy (ballast is slightly more for MV if you buy it new). But then you need seven ballasts for the flouros to get the same illumination because you'll need seven times as many tubes.

MV wins by a long way on the setup capital! Maybe five times cheaper for the same UVB level.

Okay, so now you figure wattages out, one 30w flouro is loads less costly than a 400w MV to run. But you need seven of them to match the output of the MV, which is 210w of fluoro input. Over the 1000h lifespan of a MV bulb, you'll only just about enough in electricity to pay for one 30w reptile fluoro.

I'm asking around now to find out how much the UV output falls on the MV bulbs. If it's comparable to the flouros, the MV bulbs will actually work out cheaper to run as well.

I picked up two more 30W 8.0 tubes and a 160W MV (Solar Glo). I've got the 3 floros shinning on the sides of the colas, the MV 19" above two of the plants. I had it about 14" and some small leaves were wilting, I'll move it up until I find the right distance.

Already I'm noticing trichnomes turning cloudy and a couple ember, from the buds getting UV. I've had trouble getting some strains to finish, if the UV helps with that alone I'll be happy.

The Solar Glo MV puts out more UVA than UVB, is that a help or concern to us?

Not sure about the UVA thing. Almost all UV lamps output more UVA than UVB, the mercury vapors I'm talking about output about ten times more UVA than B. There'll no doubt be things you can put in front of the light to get rid of it.

But I'm not sure if we have to. Everyone is assuming we just want UVB, I haven't heard why it's specifically B yet. It could be that the resin absorbs B the most, but that's a pure guess.

Take care with the solar glo. I can't find a UV pattern for it yet, so I'm not sure what the output looks like. All the vapor lamps have touchy patterns. They can either be way too intense or too far away depending on how focused the beam of radiation is.

The fluoros, despite needing to be really close, are at least predictable.

Most anything you put in front will block more UVB than it will UVA.. You'd need specific filters to get more shortwave than long..

Im no expert but it occurs to me that UVB during the veg state would be counter productive. Plants can get cancer too!

I will be confining my UVB exposure to the flowering stage. I am also going to expose half of my test crop during the fattening stage.

oh man... i think one of my plants now has cancer... how exactly do i tell for sure? if I smoke it will i get cancer too?

UVA is the uv that causes cancer... all of the uvb lights emit UVA, and usually in a higher quantity... i read that UVA is the DNA destroying light, while UVB is the "biologically active" UV range, which somehow creates vitamin D in your skin (and skin of reptiles)...

i run my UV lights for about 4 hrs a day during veg... so they dont get shocked by it later... although, i dont have THAT much UV... yet

The greatest irony is how hard the government cackled over how bad marijuana is for the brain, and it ends up cannaboids (THC only or others?) makes an excellent brain cancer medicine because they kill the cancer cells while leaving the healthy brain tissue intact.

I picked up 2 x 30W 8.0 tubes and a 160W MV on Feb 3, I had picked up one 30W 8.0 tube the week before.

When I bought the second set of lights 4 of my plants were 3 - 6 weeks over their harvest date and all had 100% clear trichnomes, no milky. 8 days later with the UVB lights (top colas):

Strawberry Cough: Nearly 100% amber. I missed checking over the weekend, really snuck up on me.
Northern Berry: 20% amber, some milky.
Skunkberry: 5% amber, some milky.
Skunk: 5% milky.

I've always had trouble getting my plants to finish on time, or at all. I'm a fan of UVB lights now.

We need a real UVB grow light.
