I'm a newb with a basic question. When should nutrients be added in a hydroponics system? I was under the assumption that it was the same as with a soil grow. But the directions that came with my hydroponics system made it sound as if a small dose of nutrients are used in the water from the start.

I heard that a layer of river gravel underneath the soil can help drainage. I happen to have some and am going to transplant sprouts into a 5 gallon container soon. Is it a good idea to use it? Just wondering if there are any possible negative effects or if anyone has experience with it. Also...
