You should get some commercial seeds off of some friends untill you get your media balanced out along with your lights, save the good seeds for later.

Just to add to what alien widow said, if it takes forever to dry out that means your roots are not getting oxygen,what ever kind of media you use remember it must drain well. I like using peat Moss,by itself it doesn't drain very good, so I always use a little sand in my mix to provide adequate...

You want to let your soil dry out a little but still be moist, your organic soil does it have perlite,vermiculite,sand, pines fines any thing that gives it some good drainage and aeration.

Another thing you can do is capillary, put your plant pot in a tray of water and as your soil dries it will pull water from the tray, this also forces your roots to go deeper for water making a stronger root system.

I seen that happen only once, the fan that was being used was to close and the little guys could not handle the force of the air, the ones in the middle just fine but the ones on the outside died, racked my brain for days and that was the only thing it could have been.
