CFLs need to be extremely close to be effective. 1 to 2 inches is a decent distance any further would cost you lumens.

ur welcome, i love this site, but sometimes i ask for advice and say i'm using cfls and the only responses i get are get rid of your cfls and get an hps...but for some closet growers we have to make concessions...yeah, don't spend all your money on your cfls now, cuz when you switch to flower you have to use cool white bulbs not daylight, i had 8 daylight bulbs, i've been gradually adding cool white bulbs, cuz i always figured nature doesn't go straight to flower, so i'll try to mimic nature as much as possible

This was posted to JayZero in my journal, for all you techy folks.

Yeah, that's right - lumens are candela-steradians which is a measure of light times a unit of solid angle. If you double the number of lights you double the number of candelas, but you're essentially using the same (approximate) solid angle, so you have to account for area (which is a square unit) and so you have to take the square root. Lumens can be a poor measure for plants anyway, depending on the spectrum of the lamp. Lumens are really a measure of how bright something looks to the human eye and not how bright something looks to chlorophyll. If your sources all have a similar specral distribution then then it's a decent comparison, but 10,000 lumens of CFL doesn't necessarily equal 10,000 lumens of MH or HPS, for example.

^ if you look here, you see the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll A and B. From 400nm to 500nm is "blue" light, from 500-570 is "green", 580-600 is "yellow" , and 600-700 is "red" and beyond that is infrared.

During veg it's the blue peak that is most important and during flowering it's the red peak on the right. You see that there is almost no absorption by the leaf in the middle, which is green (and which is why plants look green!).

Lumens, however, measure light as seen by the human eye, which sees most dominantly in the green portion of the spectrum. Thus it's possible to have a very green light with a high luminous intensity but which doesn't have anything that a plant could ever use. It could almost use a new unit of measurement like plant-lumens, or even red-plant-lumens and blue-plant lumens - a number that tells you how bright a light looks to a plant, not to a human.

This is why you see some of these new LED grows which don't seem to have very bright sources, but which work really well because you can get LEDs tuned exactly to what chlorophyll wants - that's to say that the LED lamp spectrum looks much more like the chlorophyll absorption spectrum. It's all enough to twist your head in knots...

:hump:
I was like a kid in a candy store when i found this site. And watching grows and learning things from people like cheetah2007, FDD, i think this other guys name is THD, all sorts of super talented growers all sharing knowledge. In a sense it completly disproves the stoner stigma and further shows the compitance of a stoner.

:joint:...........puff puff pass!

yeah, i've never had the honor of having them reply to my threads, but have gotten alot of good advice from others, the hardest thing for me is reading other peoples grow journals, they really make me impatient, but i gain knowledge from their mistakes and from their pictures...the best feeling i've had is when i went away for three days, i came back not sure if they'd survive, and to my delight they doubled in size, when i check on them twenty times a day they never seem to grow

thats rediculous. 50 days old?
ummm all i got to say is:I am using Jungle Growth potting soil from Lowe's (24-12-12) I think that is the problem.

wasnt there a thread worst grows ever? No offense honestly but i would nominate this

his setup really isn't that bad, i was thinking the ph being so high was probably the problem, but we have to learn from our mistakes or we'll never get better, plus nobody likes negative feedback

My questions were answered. go ahead and do your thing.

The worst grow ever?
The grow isn't done yet so how could you make an assumption like that? Go ahead and stay tuned see how it turns out...:joint:

I don't even know why that one is still alive. I gave up on it and started focusing on the new seeds. But the little shit is still growing new shit so who knows. I think the new soil will get everything on track.

howhigh123 i don't know if my setup is a fire hazard, but that's 12 cfls 289w total, and my closet gets up to 85 with the door closed, if i open it up it's around 80, i have air conditioning in their so i also use that to lower the temps
Bro, get more CFLs and start flowering that middle one! It's going to out grow the CFLs unless you want like 10 on it at once! Or unless you have an HPS to flower it... looking good for now though. :joint:

*EDIT*

Also people don't understand that CFLs need to cover sides, top, and bottom! NOT just the top! So like I said get more CFLs and surround that middle one and flower!

okay so heres the deal, these are my two girls, marigold and earnie. i know they have strange names as mari was "dubbed" marigold by tha chick and the other is a gift. marigold (the one on the left) was recently transplanted and has taken to it just fine. shes growing and looking fairly strong and healthy. my first question is: at seven weeks, should i be able to tell sex? im stumped on my own plant! Earnie on the other hand, was given to me to recessitate after a bad storm she somehow made it through. as you can see the leaves are suffering quite a bit do to some spidermites? i think thats what they are. she was planted on feb 14, and shes about 2 feet tall but beginning to show white pistals, so i know shes a girlie. what6 can i do to save her?if better pix are needed let me know. (i thought about lollipopping, but couldnt find anything on it. just lil wayne!!!)

It isn't a good thing, I don't remember what it was, but I seen it in another thread. And it wasn't good being purple stem.
