Make BHO with Kief?

Has anyone taken a bunch of say 73 micron sifted kief and blasted it with super clean butane to make BHO? I would expect if you shot 2 tubes (glass) of good kief and one tube of good trim you would get a nice batch of BHO. Anyone who has tried this please comment so I don't waste my time if I'm wrong...

Thanks,

bongsmilie

Should work, but a thermos soak in butane will work better.

Ethanol or Iso will also do a good job and by starting with kif, you have bypassed most of the issues with water solubles and chlorophyll pickup.

Either way makes a splendid oil.

yea it will work, i have done it.
i put bud keif then bud and it melted most of the keif and left the trich skeletons

im very new to blasting and a buddy bought a tamizium right off the bat lol. our yields have been between 8-12% on 56 gram popcorn runs which for the effort, feels like a waste of time. my question is does anyone have an opinion on say packing the entire chamber of a t175 with kief giving us a significant yield increase? the kief i get from my box taste better than the oils we get from the tami so im thinking not only will i have a substantial yield gains but lots of good flavor by reducing the moisture, chlorophyll and any other by products left in the flowers. obviously still gonna vacpurge and hopefully begin playing with winterizing soon. but ive also heard that winterizing is basicly making iso outta bho. should i skip it all and make iso outta kief? i hate being a noob at this part of the trade lol

10/12% is about our yield on popcorn and sweet trim, so you are probably on track there. The dry sieve kif that we make tastes more floral than the oil we make too, as more of the terpenes are still present, so no surprises there either.

We've run kif in the Terpenator, but never the Lil Terp, so I don't have a direct comparison for you. What we've found running the Lil Terp, which operates identically to the Tamisium, is that it doesn't recover very well below 110F, and because of the vacuum pumps, we can dial down the Terpenators to 75F, so as to yield higher THCA and produce shatter.

On the other hand, the Lil Terp is small enough to fit in our chest freezer, which opens up opportunities extracting fresh frozen material, so it is a question of the best tool for a job.

The issue with running kif in a passive system, might be getting flow through such a densly packed medium, using just gravity, so you might consider mixing it with something adding porosity.

The other issue of course, is that the solvent that you are soaking the kif with in a passive system, is already partially saturated, so unlike the Terpenator which flushes with clean butane each time, you will have to make a second run with the Tamisium or Lil Terp, to flush out the remaining oil.

that makes sense. i also dont care for he recovery process in the 175 either but i have nothing to compare it to. i saw a mason jar method that looked promising so i may give that a run to start. thanks

I use the mason jar method for alcohol, and it works well, but prefer a stainless thermos for butane extraction, here in River City where the ambient temperatures are typically above -.5C/32F.

If you live in a similar climate, and are contemplating butane extraction in a jar, you might check the thermoses out. I snag them regularly at Goodwill for $15.

get youself a mason jar, poke 3 holes in the top, one for the butane nozel tip, and 2 more of identical size, take ur lid from the mason jar with said holes in it and screw it onto an empty jar, grab a can and spray directly into the jar, the excess gas pressure will escape through the 2 additional holes in the lid, do this until you have a couple fingers worth of liquid tane in the jar, uncap and throw in your keif and swirl it around for a min. then take the mason jar lid ring, without the center peice, and use that to secure 2-5 coffee filters over the mouth of the jar, dump into a pyrex dish and then the rest is the same from there

idk, just y 2 cents
