I like it! keep it up the fish will fertilize it. Ive grown other plants in fish tanks. try floating them on styrofoam and you need an algae eating fish like a picasimus get two. gold fish make the water real clowdy so you need a filter lots of bubbles and a filter.

Algae eats the excess nutrients. If you are keeping your fish healthy there will be no excess nutrients and thus there should be very little algae.

Most larger aquaponic systems are more similar to RDWC - the fish tank and the plant tank share the same water but are separate.

gastanker- thanks for clearing up the algae, I think another pleco is in order.

ismokealotofpot- thanks. I have them on styrofoam now, plenty of air pumping in, and 1 pleco, but i think I will get more to maintain algae.

one of those pump filters will work once you get it clean and a fish tank heater that you can adjust to get the rite temps to grow roots. got to go im a busy sob.

Thought about a filter, but I think the plants would prefer the "dirty by fish" water. I'll just keep topping it off with fresh ph'd water once it is evaporated/used up.

plecos wont be happy if the water is very cold, also grow huge.

bristlenose pleco, stay much smaller (6 inches tops) and shit a ton too (along with cleaning algae (somewhat, there is really no fish that does that to any real extent) (plecos can become much much bigger and bit troublesome)

but if your plants are taking up all the nutrients from the waste then the algae should stay minimal (only what started in there)

algae would be considered beneficial really, it can not compete with true plants and it eats some of the waste the fish produce along with producing oxygen, helping to keep the fish happy.

sso- The pleco is very small as you can see here, maybe 2 inches. I once had one grow to 18" before it passed, but it took many years. I plan on recycling the fish to the pet store once this attempt is done, and try other fish if it works, and I do it again.

Figured I would give everyone a better look at the whole setup. My future plans for now are to remove the foil, replace my existing styrofoam with a piece of that blue styrofoam that will block all the light from the top, and just allow enough ambient light for the fish. I may look into some aquatic plant nutrient mix at a pet store. Enjoy.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.

I have 2 pieces of advice:

1- Use nutrients, even new sprouts need some nutes. start with 1/4 strength and work your way up.

2- IF YOU BLACK OUT THE GLASS SO THAT LIGHT CAN'T REACH THE WATER YOU WILL NOT GET ANY ALGAE. ALGAE NEEDS LIGHT TO LIVE. BLOCK THAT LIGHT!

1. I will only use nutrients if I they're safe for the fish, 2. I can't completely black out the sides or the fish won't survive, but maybe 3 sides and the top would be enough??

Cool experiment!

Maybe put the roots in a length of abs pipe to shield the roots from light(holes drilled near the bottom for h2o exchange)?

Fish tanks are for fish. 5 gal. buckets are for growing and stop torturing the fish for gods sake. WTF

I'm gonna keep em, as an experiment for larger tanks. A friend of mine, a local mmp grower, used bottled fish "poop" as fertilizer in their water. I assume this should work similarly.

well, that would be awesome if the fish poop could be enough for your plants to live in..... should be interesting

You know what I do with fish? I jab a big ass hook through their face and cast them out into the water to catch a bigger fish. Then I cook and eat the big one. What do you think of that tree huggers?
