Think about what those leaves are there for! They are like a storage system, power plant and veins at the same time they are there to soak up the light and help the plant grow! The big surface area isn't there for no reason! It is helpful to remove some of them at times but not all of them! Yes the leaves grow larger but that isn't taking any nutrients away from the rest of the plant, it is actually helping the rest of the plant! Those larger fan leaves store extra mobile nutrients (such as nitrogen and few others). If your plant starts to lack in any of those nutrients it sucks them from the fan leaves to supply the rest of the plant. your plant should be able to suck up enough nutes to spread around the whole thing. Cutting off those extra fan leaves is like cutting out a lot of your veins, sure you have other ones that still work but it works A LOT better the way it was designed!
If you want I can get all scientific on yo asses and explain in further detail!
