Hello grow community, this is my first grow and one of my first posts. What I have is a closet set up 2 X 5’ and at least 7’ high. For lighting I have a digital ballast switchable from 360w, 400W and 600W, air cooled glass reflector, 4” vortex ducting fan and a 4” carbon scrubber. Since this is my first time growing I am growing in dirt, I figure I will move up to hydro after a few successful grows. I picked up a strain called atomic northern lights and started six out of my ten seed with the paper towel method, I had a 100% success rate with them all cracking and sprouting and all but only four actually sprouted. I’m not really keeping track of days but I think I’m about 3ish weeks in now and 3 of the plants are looking great except one looks kind of deformed and not growing properly. Not too sure what to do with it so I’ll just leave it and see what happens.
So I have had them under a 18” floro, I’m using good quality soil from the grow store, I’ve been using tap water but letting sit out for a day or two before using. I’m going with organic nutes.. I’ll post pics tell me what you think of my set up and the deformed plant, and do you think my plants are ready to turn on the 400W HID? I would love to hear what improvement people can suggest for my grow space, I want it to be the perfect grow environment for my plants but have to deal with little space and I have a bit of heat problem when I turn on my 400 watt MH. Thanks for reading, stay high

Hey where are you venting the heat too? In pic 8 the 2nd to last one where does that go? I like the hanging white plastic, what exactly is that?? I would like to use something similar in my grow room setup, esp since mine is in a closet a few feet from my bed. I want to be able to sleep at night with the small mini sun in my room haha. I have a 400 watt as well but only have a Hortilux hps lamp. I will be growing autos all autos prob lowryder #2 and or blue himalaya diesel. I'm going to weatherstrip around edge of door to light seal it's pretty light tight as is. Good luck on the grow

looks good mate, but one suggestion; you may need a larger fan and scrubber (6'' or 8'' pushing over 300-400 CFM), especially if you switch to 600W for flowering. I would recommend staying with your 400w this cycle, and learn what your doing first. nothing is the same as good experience. You can definitely turn on the HID (I had mine going over sprouts) just don't put it too close yet. I'd recommend between 1.5-3 feet depending on how they respond to it.

When you say a little bit of a heat problem what temp does it get up to in there? What is the temperature of the room its in, like how much does the 400 watt raise the temp I'm basically asking?

The hot air goes from there to behind the wardrobe closet then under my bed to the window where I have a stealth vent set up, ya I sleep in my grow room, it works out good I don't mind the fan noise I had to light proof it a little bit more cuz the girlfriend was bitchin... The white plastic I got from the grow store he called it poly...

Thanks for the tips my friend, and you are right if I turn on the 600 watt light it will get way to hot, I'll stick to my 400.. Plus rep for you

the white plastic is panda film also know as poly because its made from poly its two sheets of three mil plastic heat bound together so one side is black (good for keeping light in and out) and the inside is white so that you get nice reflection as well. It's quite durable and easy to clean

At first I had bad heat problems with the 400 watt MH on I was getting up to 32\90 then I installed the little black intake fan now it's still gettin up to 28/82 I would like to have it just a bit cooler... The room it's in is just room temp around 24/75

Nice grow I'll be following along.

Your temps are about the same as mine I programmed my A/C in the room to come on when the lights do so when they are on A/C running keeping temps outside space around 72-73F then when lights off A/C is set to turn off or turn up the temp to ~75-76F

Lights on in my tent are 80F at floor and 85F at the tops and off is around 75F

Sounds like your set up has similar temps... Do you use co2? I was thinking of using co2 because of the higher heat but there doesn't really seem to be a cheap co2 set up.. Unless you want yeast fermenting in a pop bottle.. How do your plants do at the those temps?

If you got Co2 you would also have to get another fan because right now it appears that you are scrubbing and cooling all with one fan is this correct?? if so when you turn the fan off to let the Co2 saturate the room the light/hood will heat up too much. It can be dangerous in a sealed hood......You would need a dedicated 6" fan soley for cooling your hood/light this air would never come in contact with the air inside the grow room. ......Imo with out this Co2 Isnt really an effective strategy..........

Does anyone know what up with the smaller plant you see in my 8th pic, the funny thing is it was the first to sprout and was the biggest one for a wile, until it got the first set of real leaves they were small and curled on the ends, its fourth set of leaves are kinda round on the tips and my other plants way ahead now... is this bad genetics? I don't think my soil is hot.. I'll update in the morning with new pics peace

hey everyone out there, just an update here so today I moved all four of my plants into large pots that I plan to keep them in for the rest of the grow, It went very smooth but I have to admit I was a bit nervise about transplanting for the first time, I think I transplanted a bit late, because groth was slow lately and the soil was drying out fast like in a day or two, and thats why in the pics here the plants are wilting a bit but within an hour after I took these they were pointing back up, when I transplanted I gave them lots of water but I didn't have time to let the water sit out for 24 hours only maybe 3 or 4 hours.. I hope the chlorine doesn't hurt them.. and you can see I'm using the 400 watt mh now as per some advise I got here, thanks for everyones help!! The heat problem doesn't seem so bad any more the temp in there is at 27.5/82... So how much longer do you think I should veg for?

Great grow ! Your setup is similiar to mine although I'm in a tent.....using a 400w hps cool tube with a 4" vortex/charcoal cannister exhaust and another 4" vortex for fresh air intake from outside. You're GF will stop bitchin' after a couple of hits off the volcano!

Posting some pics here of the stealth ventilation I set up, I have a lot of people walk my my vent window so i want to keep it low key

PB110751cc.jpg
the above pic show what i made the my vent out of I made a thread that goes into more detail of how I put it together https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/383779-stealth-window-ventilation.html#post4892882
windowvent.JPG
thats it all put together I didn't tape the ducting in place to i can still open and close the window. I used all white so it blends in with the walls
outsideview.JPG
this is what it looks like from out side, no one can see a thing and it vents that air out great
