WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan on Wednesday, saying his scathing published remarks about administration officials undermined civilian control of the military and eroded trust on the president's war team.
Obama chose McChrystal's immediate superior — Gen. David Petraeus — to take over the troubled 9-year-old war in Afghanistan.
The president said he did not make the decision to accept McChrystal's resignation over any disagreement in policy or "out of any sense of personal insult."
"I believe it is the right decision for our national security," Obama said in a statement in the Rose Garden, where he was flanked by Petraeus along with Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he has accepted the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal with regret, but is certain that it is the right decision for the country's national security and the future of the U.S. mission in Afghanistan.
Speaking in the Rose Garden, Obama says McChrystal's biting comments about the president and his aides in a magazine article did not meet the standards of conduct for a commanding general.
Obama named Gen. David Petraeus to assume McChrystal's role as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. He says the move will allow the U.S. to maintain leadership and momentum in the war.
Obama made the announcement following a private meeting with McChrystal and a separate meeting of his national security staff.

i'm glad he's gone.

He fucked up and he knows it. It sucks because we're in the middle of a war and really can't afford this kind of politicking, but when a theatre commander says this kind of stuff about the president and the civilian administration in time of war, this is usually the outcome. General MacArthur's beef with Harry Truman is a pretty good example...

And robert, I do think that anyone in the military chain of command who goes outside of that and voices criticism of his superiors to the press needs to be sanctioned. What do you think would have happened if an enlisted man or officer under mccrystal's command had given an interview to rolling stone magazine where he called him and his staff clowns and whatever else? Same thing applies. You can voice your concern through internal channels or you can wait until you're retired from the military, but for him be making these kind of statements to the press in his position is a pretty serious offense. Hell, the same thing would happen if you worked for kinko's and talked shit about management....

this guy showed contempt for his position. he gave ME the impression that he's unhappy with his job, unhappy with the way things were going, and that he was not really doing much about it.

his verbal beating of the prez and vice prez showed his lack of commitment to the cause.

he's in charge of several hundred thousand troops in the longest military conflict in the US's history.

he's not a manager at the local Kinko's, or jack in the box. his attitude doesn't even deserve that.... it's more in line with a 'go-for' at a multinational, you know, those unpaid interns that 'go-for' coffee, or 'go-for' chinese.....

and the Afgan people will be happy when the US is gone. to them Mcchrystal was just another gringo living on the other side of the fence. saying they're not happy he's gone is implying their happy now. which they ain't....l..

While I think the General should be reprimanded, I think removing him is a mistake driven by hurt pride on Obama's part.

im glad hes gone... if hes stupid enough to say stuff like that to a famous magazine like rolling stone than he is too stupid to be leading our troops. i mean come on what was he thinking? you guys can hate obama all you want, hes not the reason were at war anyways you guys always talk shit about obama when it was bush that got us into this mess. bush left obama in a fucked up position because he was such a piece of shit president. that article said that even McChrystal voted for obama. i would love to actually here a good reason anyone has for not liking the pres other than "hes a turd of a president"

Well anyone who says something bad about the Pres should be reclassified as a Domestic Terrorist or Extremist, all rights taken away and at least 5 years in a foreign country prison for extended detention and the full slew of torture methods used to glean any useful info out of him. I bet you anything McChrystal is really just a terrorist in disguise and he knows where Bin Ladin is.

Makes sense really. Been there also.

As much as I see wrong with this administrations policies and lack of leadership, firing this general was the right decision.

ya this is not s stupid man he cant quit because it will be like leaving his troops, so he forced the pres to fire him cuz the president is puttin him in an impossible position

troops are being told not to patrol areas where they think they will encounter hostilities

its redicules, in a war innocent people are gonna get killed if the pres cant deal with that then he needs to send the boys home instead of have them die with fucked up rules of engagment. if he sends them home then he will give terrorists back thier safe haven, this fucker needs to get his meddling finger out of this serious situation for our country, he is fucking shit up bad

ever since obama gave that fuckin deadline of troop widthral everyone started planning for the day after the troops leave, the taliban, al queda even our allie pres of afghanistan is freakin out cuz its gonna be his head on a platter when they leave unless he joins the taliban himself which he has already mentioned in public out of frustration with this presidents policies

why did he give the deadline for troop widthrawl that is endangering our mission? why? only to please his irrassional base. our troops being fucking killed so he can cover his ass politically!!! he is a real evil fucker in my book

obama is dangerous on all fronts

even if i new for a fact the democrates would lose both houses in November I would still be waiting in line to vote on election day

just so I can say I had a hand in shutting down this menace

i have a feeling a lot of people are gonna wanna get thier kicks in on election day,

Maybe you should watch the news some more. All the things you're bitching about in terms of our policy, like the restrictive rules of engagement and the suggested award for 'courageous restraint' are all things that were put into place by mccrystal. And if by his 'irrassional base' you mean people who oppose the war in afghanistan, that's actually a majority of the country, so of course there needs to be a timeline for drawing down our commitment. Frankly, the more I read about the counter-insurgency strategy they're pursuing, the more I think we need to get the hell out of there. Sadly, the two main case studies it's based on are the algerian war and the vietnam war, neither of which went very well for the counter-insurgents.

Read the actual article....you'll get a better idea of what this is about.

And do you really only bother to turn out to vote if you're afraid you're candidate is going to lose...?

people who wanna pull out of afghanistan are irrasional fools, fact

what else would you call people advocating to give osama binladin and mulla omar back thier base of operations, so they can declare victory against us and begin to build up thier terrorist training gounds and base of planning for thier attacks again.

complete fools and thats a simple fact not even an opinion.

and the majority of americans want us to win the war and be done with it, not leave like cowards after sabotaging our own war and wasting 9 years of sweat blood and tears only to put us in the same position we were in pre 911, abe how old are you i thought you were old enough to know these things, maybe the name makes me think of you as old i dont know,

bleeding hearts have no place in defense of our nation, when you hire a body gaurd you dont hire him on his skills in playing nice, obama is turning the mission in afghansitan into the peace core with guns

im sure mcchrystal was real happy with what was going on like you said above, after all he did just offer his resignation after sabotaging his own career

your letting politics get in the way of the saftey of your nieghbors and family, and obama is playing politics by setting the deadline for political reasons and you know it, and by doing so he is sabotaging our own mission in afghan and getting more of our troops killed. that is a real sad day for america when our president cares more about his populatiry so much so to endanger the lives of our men

there is another al queda attacked brewing and its gonna be worse than the last one.

they have just released a message saying last time they showed restraint but this time they will not

the first plan was to fly the planes into our nucleur power stations causing a huge calamity for america

however, it was decided by the al queda brass that this would be too harsh an attack and could illicit a nucleur response so they decided to hit the towers and non nucleur sites

recently there was like 15 afghani pilots that were training in the usa that have gone awal

hopfully its just a coincidence

but mark my words they are gonna attack before obama leaves office. they know he is weak and inexpirianced and they will attacked under his watch

ill put $1,000 on it that it will happen before christmas

I wonder if you'll have the balls to say what you say then abe, when they got the skin melting off our sons and daughters in the news. there will be blood, there always has been blood and there will always be blood until we evolve physically into a different species.

this is all fact

if you people were truly concerned about the death of innocent life you can sell a great deal of your "luxury" items and save countless starving boys and gurls in africa and across the world with just a few bucks each

but i know its much easier and cheaper to sit on your high horse wailing against civillian casualties while you by expensive things and go to expensive resturants and let the starving children die while you dont even say a word about them

no this is not about them is it abe, its about politics

liberals act like they are so humanitarian but when the rubber meets the road you will find that they give the least and scream the loudest
