My 400w hps light is 18 inches above my 2 super silver haze plants that are 5 weeks old. They are veggin under the hps and they stand about 11 inches high. I looked at my leaves and they show small brown spots that i think are related to light burn but i dont know! The spots are mostly on the tips and on the top few leaves.

Any tips on how far away my 400w HPS should be from plants? I had them at 18 inches but i couldn't figure out the problem exactly so i raised them to 20 inches just incase they were getting burned.

Remember that as long as you can place your hand above the top of your plant underneath the light and it's not burning your hand its fine or can be moved closer.

what i have is a electronic thermometer and hydrometer. It has a probe on a cable that i have hanging from the top of my box. I always hang the probe right at the top of my plants and keep it at about 80

Without a hood, I hung a fishing weight on a 12 inch string to estimate height from the plants and would still bring it closer.

With the air cooled hood, I can bring 6 inches or closer, I don't worry to much.

That's with a good oscillating fan blowing at the tops of the plants.
