Like your idea but I think there might be far too many losses in the various different conversions, that among many other issues. Who knows though, there might be some nano tech out there that could do it.

As a hobby we aren't so much concerned with accuracy so your idea of calibrating a DIY sensor to a simple baseline is great. Cut costs, get more sensors.

If someone came up with a usb connection interface for the sensor, that would open up more options. The aquatic plants folks have DIY waterproof sensors so it might be good to leverage their work.

Well if they knew something about the subject then they probably would have come across what the aquatic guys are doing. It is bound to be asked.
