off grid electricity

One thing to keep in mind is, a 400 watt wind turban is rated at a 28 mph wind speed, so the lower the wind speed the lower watts you will get. Also a generator should only be used at half the rated output lets say you need 2500 watts, then you would actually need one rated at 5000 watts...you can pull 5000 watts from it, but it's not a good idea to run at full rated load all the time

I was going to dig by hand. The wind turbines I am lookin at are rated for as little as 2mph winds. Does it snow a lot in San Luis I was looking for weather reports too

I went ahead and contacted one of the sales reps for the wind turbine so hopefully soon I get a better idea of what to buy. I think I would go with 3 400 watt wind turbines with 600 watt solar panels. That way I can have 1200 watts for lights and 600 watts for anything I want running during the day.
I need some kind of battery pack to store extra energy. I'm not sure what that means, if I don't have anything connected to the turbine and turned on will it blow up or something else terrible because it's not using up the energy its making?

Hopefully ill be able to have enough electricity to charge my phone and take pics of the grow!

I am not sure where exactly this post would fit, I was kinda looking around and saw nothing that really fit, so here goes.

I am buying some land in colorado so I can grow legally, however it is kind of far from civilization so I'd like to make use of a generator for my lights so I can stay on site.
Why not rig up a light depro greenhouse?. with a system to heat the soil beds.

If this is a seasonal grow thing, I'd keep it simple, use propane heat to keep things maintained.

Gotta ask where you gonna get your water from?.. tanks?.. bladder tanks?. gonna truck it in?.

Moving to colorado to get a large parcel of land and try to hide a large grow underground off the grid is pointless. no colorado law will protect a large grow like that. you may as well do it in any other state really prices are more there and expectation for quality is never a priority like it is here. before you do anything make sure you are well educated about your decision. not to say you couldnt do it...

large scale? what I'm getting out of his posts is that he is moving to Colorado to grow a 1200 watt setup. Why not just do that in your closet.

Yes, the OP states that he want to purchase land in CO to cultivate there.

And if you look at the Cole Memo, he would fall under federal enforcement because of the possible diversion to other markets. I'm not well versed in CO law on plant counts or restrictions but my understanding is that many of our current MJ laws were simply cut and pasted from yours. The point being is that a non-resident of CO growing isn't exactly legit.

Anyways..

A 1200 or even 2KW grow off grid would hardly create enough revenue to pay for itself. Its just not a sound business model. Hobby growing is one one thing, _nothing_ wrong with that. However there is no real thought put into this growplan really, alternative energy? Why?.. Cost analysis?.. none.. Where is this remote piece of land at?..

At best its an incomplete thought..

I am buying some land in colorado so I can grow legally, however it is kind of far from civilization so I'd like to make use of a generator for my lights so I can stay on site. I'm planning to dig an underground house with a few separate rooms for growing, and I will not be using much of anything in the way of electronics. I have a 300 watt led light, and I will be using a small heater to help regulate the temperature. I also have a 1400 watt flower led which I would love to use, but is it going to be cost effective to get a generator big enough? What components do I need other than the generator? I was looking at wind and solar combos, and I found a couple that I was going to get.
155$ wind generator 400w
255 wind + solar 400w + 200w
When I look at ways to connect it and when I contacted the supplier, they told me I needed batteries. What are the batteries for?
I have a budget of around 1500. I did find a 2000w generator for 1350 whic fits in the budget but what else is needed to plug my lights in and grow?
u near running water ?
Why not grow outside ? U miles away from anywhere

You would be mostly correct about that legal mumbo jumble. But I would have to disagree; A $1500 1200w set-up will pay for its self after one use and can be put in a spare bedroom. You could make some money, but definitely not enough to live on. And at that point if you smoke you will want to play with a lot of the bud, so definitely I agree its not really a business model. In Colorado there is a requirement of residency for 2 years before you can apply to own a business...

Meh.. why reduce it to "mumbo jumble". I personally know a grower that avoided a felony following basic plant count rules. If there are legal problems with the OP's idea of growing why not mention it? However its his own responsibility to understand state regulations..

You can recover your cost on equipment as a hobby grower, shouldn't take to long.. I'm not debating that at all. 1kw in a spare room is a good entry point into this hobby. A little to smoke, a little to sell no problem. But the scale of buying land, renewable energy equipment.. etc.. geeze.. its starting to get expensive for little bit of product.

So.. why not keep the cost low?.. Its obvious the OP wanting a cash crop he can turn in say 90 days. Rig up a low cost greenhouse, do a hundred plants in a manual light depro greenhouse since he will be on location.. and come back
every year?. You have to justify being out there. I know if I took 90 days off it better be more or equal to my wage.

It's not avoiding a felony when you are following the law. It's not criminal in any way. That's why in my original post I said "colorado law will not protect you if...."

Also medical users can extend their plant count, but the max a greenhouse can have is 36 plants. I don't know Alaska, I know Colorado. Not easy to do a large outdoor here afaik. There is no legal option for a recreational or medical grower to sell any homegrown pot to anybody.

Just build a shed man and insulate it. Yes it will be cost effective you will save around 60 bucks a month per 1000w light for electricity plus what you have to pay to wire it which costs $$$$. You will need a battery to store the power, this might get pricy. Know that with renewable energy sources you do not get 100% efficiency or even 50% 50% of the time. The battery will cost $$$$.
My house and 20x20 detached building was less than 100K with all my grow supplies and costs of work done included in that price

Have a number of friends who live off the grid. None grow, however. One's system seems quite nice. His system utilizes solar, wind, and a diesel generator all feeding a rack of 16 ( or more ) large trucksize batteries. I know he has always been disappointed with the wind and the solar but they fill in a few days. The diesel generator is bigger than most "Honda"s one sees, but I don't know how big. The generator is housed in an insulated pole barn room, exhausted to the outside. It is wired to kick in when needed. The insulated room is for sound muffling (although the generator itself has a full-fledged muffler) and for winter warmth. Oh, he also uses propane for a stove and water heater. Not sure if anything helps but figured I would throw this out here.
