Hey guys, im looking into selling my hps due to energy cost and looking into LEDs. I am planning on getting a 4'x4'x6'11' grow tent and I intent to use every inch of it with a ScroG. Previously I had planned to use 300w hps which I figured would accurately cover said space with plenty of light. so Im thinking something comparable but Led. I took a look at the Area51 RW150s that some of you were talking about recently, that is a little pricy but suppose I could swing it after I sell my Hps.... Would one of those cover a 4x4 ok? would I need to link another one? and last question, are there any cheaper ones that may suite my purposes?

You need 4. ($1600)

But, (2) RW-150's with (2) RW75's would work great too.

With 2 150's and 2 75's you would have about 29 watts sq/ft and give you nice results but to max the 4x4 space 4 150's would give you about 38 watts sq/ft.

If you can wait for Area 51's new lights coming in June they will cost you less for the same coverage.

boy that is quite a dent in the pockets....however I assume bulbs don't need to be replaced as often and the obvious energy saving. Would anyone safely recommend DiY Led lighting for cost efficiency? or should I just go ahead and run my Hps until I can afford some good Leds?

You can definitely save some good money by going DIY COB's,Area 51's new light will be Vero 2 COB based if your not up to DIY.

For a 4x4 u will need between 600 to 700 watts of LED. If u was to. Use HID! U would need 750 watts to properly cover An area like that. You would need 4 area51 RW150!! If I was u! I would stick with a 750watt hps until you learn what LED tech is all about! Stay away from the oh my god that's cheap LED units for sale. you need a aircooled.raptor with a 750watt hortilux.superhps. 1 area51 Rw 150 will cover a 2x2ft6 perfectly!!!! Unless you have 1500 to spend on LEDs?I would stay away for another year or so and study up! Units in the next couple years are gonna be a buyer's market!

im thinkin your probably right on this. right now I only got enough for the new tent and maybe one of those A51s (they look nice though). But I only have a 600w hps and im trying to only run it at 50% at most. would it be worth it yield wise to just say fuck it and leave her on full power? 600w Hps for a 4x4 sounds like plenty to me but im not very experienced... im just really afraid of coming home one day to a $300 electric bill. it's worth paying to me because im learning and im like fuckit ill work my ass off just to learn to grow but my room mate does not get the same benefit and if the utility bill cost more than the yield would then we have obviously lost a lot of the cost efficiency that one hopes for in growing for personal. this HID is all i got though unless I want to get really creative with CFL but im you would need a lot im sure for a 4x4 and they don't give me dense nugs= less weight. I should probably look into ordering some high-yield strains too might help.

300 bucks on the street buys you an ounce... unless you just Uber fuck up, you'll be happy. I wouldn't dim the 600w. 600w over a 4x4 is kindve shy. 600 for a 3x3, 1k for a 4x4, in hps terms.

I know there has been some recent discussion, iv'e tried a site/google search but no luck on date sorting, can someone please suggest the current best option for red/higher power?

I've noticed an immediate and distinct difference between sister plants under the new 3k cob and my sgs-160 (I defer to some here who would think this implausible, it's happening as we 'speak')

I thought they were similar but the sgs is clearly frostier and faster to bulk up, even the one errant bud from the 3k hanging over to the sgs is frostier.

I want to try a red mix with 2 cool white in my own light bar.. out of curiosity.

What is the exact COB you have and how are you driving it?

600hps is minimum for 4x4. High yielding strains won't mean anything unless u have the right watts per sqft

Well I have a few options for drivers Cap'n but my group of cobs are cxa 3070 / z4. I have one that's 5k and one 4k left.
It seem SGS was 2:1 4k /red.

No secrets here Psuagro (within reason ; ), i'll put up a pic sometime.

Perhaps there is?, the one under z4 is nice, (both regrowth) as nice as the first run.
Just not quite so advanced and definite frost factor, i was a bit shocked after only a week or so.

What are you driving the Z4's at,any reflectors, what distance from the plant?

In my cab the z4's (x4) are also driven at 700mA and i ordered some 60 degree reflectors, trying to keep some greater distance. I have a few different drivers. The photoreds at 700mA would be 1.6w (iirc). We'll see how things roll over the next few weeks. Just a thought to experiment a bit, maybe just two cobs/1 plant, somewhere closer to the SGS ratio, it could be the cool white rather than all the red, something is causing a marked difference.

What kind of distance are you keeping them at,do you have a way to measure your output (umoles)?
