Poor kids who do everything right don’t do better than rich kids who do everything wrong

I would improve K-12 education, make it easier for lower classes of people to get secondary education, enact a 28th amendment to the constitution to get money out of politics and kick campaign finance reform into overdrive
How does this work in my hometown of Detroit with a 30% graduation rate? Throw in free college if you want even, it does nothing to affect the high school drop out situation and the fact that teen pregnancy and single parent births are along the same percentages as dropouts.

Should we place the blame on society? On republicans? Or should the dropouts maybe take some responsibility?

There are many different reasons why the graduation rate in Detroit is 30%, and many of the solutions I listed would solve some of them. Ending the war on drugs and prison industrial complex would solve some more.

Personal responsibility is part of being a productive member of society, regardless of dropout rates

Who are the most vocal about the drug war, no child left behind, Citizens United/McCutcheon?

Should we place blame on people in poverty? On minimum wage workers? Or should politicians maybe take some responsibility?

I'm big on personal responsibility but if you want to place blame on politicians, fine. Who has had major control of Detroit the last 50 years? How did the police budget become mostly paying legacy costs? Why aren't people paying water bills then complaining when water is shut off? Should retired city workers be soaking up more of the budget than actual workers? How can this be sustainable long term?

How on earth can you make Detroit's problems about republicans? Who was the last republican that had power in Detroit? Was the city better off then under pub rule or now that Dems have a deathlock?

Reread my post. Nowhere in it am I blaming republicans. I'm placing the majority of blame on politicians who have fundamentally damaged our political process.

Cool, then we agree democrats have ruined Detroit because those are the ONLY politicians elected the last 50 years. It's way more than just that, we the people are the most to blame. Who knew paying the lawnmower man from age 50 years on (x 100,000) for not working would be a poor business model? It seemed like a good idea at the time, it "felt" good.

Well, when politicians put the interests of businesses and lobbyists above American citizens, that's the type of shit that happens. When politicians can be bought with legal bribes, the law needs to be changed.

I would agree that the people are to blame for this because we let it happen, and continue to let it happen, and not many people are trying to change it, and many more don't think any change is necessary.

The people that are trying to change it are the pioneers history will look back on as heroes.

there goes ginwilly with his retarded talking points about detroit again.

some subtle bullshit about how "dems" have caused all these problems such as "teen pregnancy" and "single parent births" and "high school dropouts" and "30 kid's he's SPAWNED" (not a loaded word at all). anyone having a hard time making sense of what or who ginwilly might be referring to, folks?

none of this could be due to a legacy of systemic de-facto segregation made suddenly worse by industry leaving the city for a number of reasons.

i guess detroit's mayor is single-handedly responsible for offshoring of jobs, NAFTA, 120+ years of systemic discrimination, and more.

all because ginwilly said so.

make it easier for lower classes of people to get secondary education,
The only thing a poor person needs in order to get secondary education is a GED and the ability to fog a mirror. You do not need money, or a job, or the ability to think. You can be a math major that can't do arithmetic for god sake, we see that example quite often around here. Just about anyone can get secondary education, no problem. The problem comes when it is time to study and be responsible, or be a dummy and drop out with nothing but 20 years of monthly payments to show for it.

You don't need money to finance your education?

I guess all major cities are in the same shape then?

You really are an idiot...

People who have run Detroit into the ground are people Buck agrees with so he makes excuses just like they make excuses. This is why there is little hope for a return to it's glory days of being one of the top cities in the country.
