Calcium Deficiency?

Hey guys,

Does this look like a Calcium deficiency to you? If it is, I'm kind of scratching my head. I had been adding 5ml of CalMag to each watering up until just a few days ago. I water with well water.

These are 20 day old girls from seed growing in 60% coco 40% perlite.

looks like you have Manganese Toxicity. I would flush and use the cal/mag spaireling. those are only trace elements and dont need to be used alot.

I would not worry too much about your cot leaves or first single leaves, or even your first set of 3 leaves. They are all short term seedling vegetation that die after the plants take off because their job is done. I would evaluate all of your leaves above them for feedback.

What is the ppm on your well water? Often no need to add cal/mag to well water but depends on your water ppm.

My well water comes in at 170PPM. Aside from those 2 problems, they look very healthy. I recently started feeding so I will no longer use CalMag. Does this sound reasonable? As far as flushing, when I water I'm trying to get a LOT of run-off to keep the small pots well flushed.

Your well water should have all the cal/mag you need so discontinue adding it.

As for your watering habits, it depends a little on how you are feeding them. In general if you are using a quality soil mix you will not need to add nutrients for first month of use. In this case you should not be producing much run off as you are just flushing useful nutes out of your pots. But a little run off once a week is good to avoid dry spots in your soil.

If you are growing in a nute low soil and feeding with salt based nutes then it is a good practice to have run off to avoid salt build up in your soil.

I'm growing in 60% coco and 40% perlite. The reason I have been trying for a lot of run-off is because of PH problems I had about a week ago. I was originally watering very small amounts...just enough to keep the 1"x1" rockwool cube that the seeds were started in moist. I was getting no run-off. When I did my first heavier watering with run-off, the run-off tested at 8.5 PH so that is why when I water every other day I have been overwatering to get a lot of run-off. So far it has been working. PH dropping from 8.5 to 7.5 to 6.5.

Edit: I will stop using CalMag altogether!

thats how you got (Manganese Toxicity) by watering small amounts with cal/mag. now that you flushed it you should be ok. remember when you stats feeding again start at 1/4 strength and go from there.

Could you explain how too much cal/mag creates manganese toxicity? Or just point me toward your source on that, I would like to learn more about it.

Thanks!

Your ph in coco is recommended at 5.8.when you get it down closer to this i believe your girl will start to get better.
Also your coco will need supplemented with cal/mag throughout your grow,as coco has a tendency to hang on to these.I use coco specific nutes and still supplement with cal/mag just about every water/feed.
Have a look at this linkhttp://forum.grasscity.com/coco-coir/620656-askeds-coco-guide.html
Good luck with your grow.
