Would this work as odour filter?

I am attempting to make my own Carbon air filter for 5 times less the price as the one on here that Ive read about. I just want some feed back on what you think and if it would work or not.

First of all I obtain a traffic cone.

I will cut the middle section of the traffic cone leaving two strips to hold the traffic cone together. I will then tape wire mesh around the part of the cone that i cut out with duct tape. Then I will wrap the carbon filter around the wire mesh taping it to the cone on both ends. I then air tight seal the fan into the larger end of the cone for maximum air pressure. I will then seal the smaller end of the cone to again maximise air pressure.

Why I have chose a traffic cone is because it has a large end and I can fit a house hold fan into there.

This unit will the be fixed to the ceiling of the grow room somehow.. lol...

What you reckon?

I wouldn't trust anything but a real carbon coal filter for my room. Its just a safer method and a way safer way of keeping your grow on the low.

Why reinvent the wheel? Go buy a carbon fiber filter (about $10 at HD) and stuff about 5 layers in something; move the air thru it and it comes out clean. It works for me. You want both ends of it the same diameter and you don't want to just blow air at it but through it. BTW, welcome to the forum captain Solo. :)

you can build your own carbon filter - somebody had a really good design but i can't seem to locate it. But even if you roll your own filter you should still use it the same way as a store bought one. (see potpimps post)

Ok, me and a friend are growing, just a little something at first to make sure we got everything in order then were gonna go for a bigger scale. The reason I suggested stuff in image is because that way the only thing I would have to purchase is the carbon filters...

I was out and about today and priced it all up, its not 2 much the way Ive seen on here anyway its just I was trying to save money.

Also the plants are about 3 weeks old... Im gonna be testing some of my own methods throughout the growth of this small crop (only 3 plants), Which I will then enforce on my big crop..

Would it be ok to do a Grow Journal like everyone else?

EDIT: Thanks for the welcome to the forum aswell dude ;)

Had this saved from OG complete with pics (small). Thought I'd share......It's what I'm running with excellent results. Thanks Sun is Shining

if you see this.......(sorry I stole it) Glad I could save this piece of info. Everything is laid out the same as it was on OG so sorry if the text doesn't go with the pics!

Yet another addition to the family of DIY carbon filter designs.
I modeled this after the expensive professional filter. It's very simple and easy to build. The only tools required are a screw driver and some wire cutters or snips of some kind.
All the materials were just under $50, here's the rundown:
Hardware cloth ~ $6 (the steel, not the plastic. in the fencing section)
6" & 8" duct caps ~ $4 (one each)
6" duct collar ~ $2
6" x 8" duct reducer ~ $3
Hose clamps ~ $6 (two 6" clamps and four 4" clamps)
Three 28oz jars of Activated Carbon ~ $20 (from the petstore)
Small package of Poly-fill ~ $1.50 (from wal-mart)
Two packages(or two-pair) Extra Queen size black panty hose ~ $2

Round that all up to $45

Ok. First to build the "core", get the hardware cloth out and wrap it around the 6" cap (for sizing, I suppose you could measure instead), and snip. Leave a few inches to overlap to strengthen the seem.
Be sure to snip so as to not leave a row of points, that will undoubtedly poke the shit out of you, not to mention it'll rip the panty hose.
Once the HC is snipped and wrapped around the cap, use a 6" hose clamp to clamp it down. Do the exact same thing on the other end but using the 6" collar - put the crimped end of the collar inside the core, leaving the tabbed end outward.
Cut the legs off a pair of panty hose and stretch each one over the capped ind of the core, stretching them and covering the entire core with two layers.

There are pics missing for a couple of steps, I appologize, my battery kept going out.

So that's the core, it's finished. Oh yeah, I added a 3rd hose clamp in the middle of the core for additonal structural integrity, though it's not necessary.

Next, take the collar-end of the core and set it into the 6" x 8" reducer as shown. Flip it over and tape the collar to the inside of the reducer. I used aluminum tape, but a good quality duct tape should do just as well. Fill in the space between the collar and the core with Poly-fill (batting or anyting of that noture will work just as well).
Once you have that done, it's time to fix the HC to the 8" reducer. Place the 8" cap in the opposite end of the HC for spacing and structure.
Form the HC around the reducer, just as it was done with the 6", and clamp it down using two 4" hose clamp together-running into each other. I couldn't find 8" hose clamps, so I put two 4" together.

28518.jpg
Now take the panty-part of the hose, the waste band and whatnot, and stretch it over the outside of the HC. Repeat with the other pair, so you have two layers.

Now for the exciting part, fill it in with the carbon You may need to hold the core at first to keep the spacing even. This will give you a continuous 1" layer of carbon. Perfect.

Leave an inch or two of space and fill in with the Poly-fill.
*Not* At first I built it using the full 24" of the HC, after filling it in with carbon, I was left with about 6" not filled, so I snipped the HC rolls to a couple inches above the carbon line.

Now replace the 8" end-cap, clamp it down, and you're done
To refill, simply loosen the clamp on the 8" end cap, remove the cap, dump the carbon, re-fill, replace cap.

In my bloom room, I'm running a Hurrican 6" 307 cfm in-line. I have it T'd, one line pulling from the sealed, air-cooled hood (which pulls non-stinky air from outside the room through it), and the other line running to the filter. So the filter is actually "underpowered", but that's fine as it allows for slower, more even flow of the stinky air over the carbon. The open design of this filter creates minimal air-flow restriction.

This guy works like a champ, the stinky-ass air that was being blown into the backyard no longer smells at all.

I'm sure there's a couple things and points-of-interest I'm missing, but I'll get them as I remember

I hope somebody can make use of this, and I hope this is as easy to understand as I think it is.

Dr. Substrate's DIY Carbon Scrubber Ok here is how I made the Scrubber

Parts

1x 4" hose collar
1x 4" End Cap
1x 8"to4" reducer
1x 8" End Cap
1 roll of hardware cloth (The metal screen I use on this)
6x 4" hose clamps
^^^^ The Hardware Store ^^^^
2 pair of queen sized black pantyhose
^^^^ The Grocery Store ^^^^
14 liters of Activated carbon
^^^^ The Pet Shop ^^^^

I started by building the two tubes. I wrapped the hardware cloth around the 4" end cap and 4" collar, Cut it to size leaving about 1" of overlap, then used the hose clamps to hold it together.

I then did the same with the 8"to4" reducer and the 8" end cap. You will need to put the smaller one into this one and make a good fit top to bottom. so it is good to dry fit it and adjust it a little. I used 2 of the 4" hose clamps, put end to end, to make an 8" hose clamp to hold this together.

Now take the pantyhose and cut the legs off. Stretch 2 of the legs over the 4" piece you made. This is a cover so the activated carbon does not fall through the hardware cloth.

You will want to do the same with the 8" piece and make sure it is covered.

Now you will want to remove the 4" to 8" reducer from the end of the 8" piece and set the 4" piece inside the 8" one. This will leave you with a gap all the way around

Once in place I put 1" of stuffing (Cotton) in the bottom around the 4" piece. I put it in place using a wooden dowel I had. I then poured the Activated Carbon in filling the space. I put about 1" of stuffing at the top, reattached the 4" to 8" reducer and clamped it into place.

Hook up your hose and blower and it is ready to go.

I hope this helps.

Ok thanks....

The plants are starting to stink already so I need to get on the scene ASAP!

Will be making it sometime this week...

However I will post some pics 2moro night once the light is on.

8-)

It is a bad thing when your neighbours moan & bitch about anything possible..

Put the rubbish out on the wrong day, gets a warning from the landlord...

BITCHES!!

BTW... I love the smell, I wish I could get a scratch and sniff for you 2 test drive it ;)
