i'm going out to buy a new laptop today. they all come with windows vista. i've heard bad things about it. first off it's not compatible with our printers. i want windows xp. what should i do? i'm buying a toshiba, probably the 15.4 inch model.

You should buy a Mac they don't come with Vista!

J/K i won't start that argument here,
Your best bet is to order a laptopp with XP. I believe Dell and HP offer you the option when you build the system on their websites.

My wife got a laptop for xmas, that we upgraded to Vista, and she hated it and we had to downgrade it again!

But seriously, a Mac is a great option! I have one and I love my macbook

i bought mine last year just before the change over. they sent me the vista disk once it came out. it's still in the package.

i've heard vista looks cool but sucks for operations.

for all the crap that microsoft gets, you'd be surprised at how hard they work to make sure their OS is backwards compatible with so many little things. Vista was a new OS built from scratch. They cleaned up a lot of useless crap in XP, unfortunately they also cleaned up useful crap. while vista may seem like sux, they constantly update the os, bringing back things they thought no one used.

i actually haven't used vista since it's beta version, so it's been a couple of years but it thought it was alright...buggy but alright.

Vitsa is just like any new OS. It hasnt had enough time to work out the kinks just like Windows XP didn't get good till SP2. I got a new laptop for college from dell and it come preloaded with Vista. I personally don't hate vista but definately prefer XP. Vista looks nice has nice features but there just isn't enough programs, apps, and stuff that works well on Vista.

You might just want to get the laptop and wipe the HD and reinstall XP. If you can live with random crashes and explorer errors go with Vista because it looks so nice. But if you want stability that has support for about every app/prog go with XP.

I'm a mac person myself, and I must say once you go mac, you never go back. Flawless performance, everything is plug and play, no third party garbage that comes pre installed like a pc.
I disagree with the statement that Windows Vista is like any new OS. Windows Vista is like any new Windows OS, buggy, with many security problems, and was released when it should have still been in beta stages. Get a mac, you won't regret it...

Well all OS have bugs in them its inevitable. Yes True Mac are totally less likely to have issues when you get them but a computer is a computer it has bugs no matter what.

Im currently dual-booting with Vista right now FDD.

In my opinion, its not THAT much different than XP...besides the jazzed up appearance and some pretty good security options. If you're worried about appearance with your devices, just get a laptop with XP if you'd prefer. Check with your printer manufactures manufactures, they might have a Vista driver out for your model.

If you plan on upgrading to Vista in the future... Id say its better to just get a computer with it preloaded. It will save you countless hours of configuration in the long run. I can't tell you how many people I have had to talk through their configuration just because Vista isn't because with everything. Vista is definitely more stable than any Microsoft OS I've had to deal with.

You're going to need a lot of RAM to run Vista. Anything under 1 gig would be sluggish. And if you do decide on Vista...LEAVE User Access Control ON!!! <-- Cant stress that enough.

Summary: Vista is comming, theres no stopping it. Might as well get used to it.

Vista will probably be a pretty cool OS in a year or to when MS comes out with their new OS Windows Up Yer Ass.

I have found that buying their new MS operating systems is usually much more pleasant after it's about a year or two old.

Why do you suggest leaving User Access Control On? The constant warnings and things asking for your permission is just so annoying.

While I agree that Vista will get better, for a laptop it is a resource hog.

I also would like to point out that there is currently 1 piece of malware out for Mac's and no known viruses for OS X.

i call bs. no offense to mac users but the moment people get more fed up with macs than microsoft, mac users are f**ked. mac have very very little protection. what makes it worse is that everyone things macs are safe, when in reality they're just not the ones under fire. it's...alarming.

don't mistake me for a windows user, although i do have a machine that runs windows, i'm a linux user.

I am perfectly aware that the only reason my Mac is more secure is because we only make up 5% of the OS population. But as long as large corporations stick with PC I have a pretty good feeling about my security!

Agreed! Everytime you want to do something Administrative it will pop up and annoy the shit out of you. I know it sucks, but quoted: "I'd rather have the momentary inconvenience of the UAC prompt than the possibly far greater inconvenience of a piece of malware or some other mess-up." UAC is bascially just to stop you and think "do I REALLY want to change that?" Sometimes its good to stop and think about that. You can really do some damage easily if you dont know what you're doing. Its also a good security measure to stop unwanted software installation too.

Bascially, if you're savvy when it comes to computers, go ahead and turn it off. But if you're not comfortable around Vista or computers in general, leave it on for awhile. You can always turn it off later.

Yep i agree that if your not that computer savy then leave it on because you probably cant figure out how to turn it off any hoo. If ya know what you doin turn that stuff off.
