Will this bulb work?

First time grower, trying to set up in my apartment, just one or 2 plants.
Found this cheap bulb, will it work, and will I be able to simply put it into a desk lamp for a cheap setup?

No, I have nothing but some seeds that are currently germinating.

Is the ballast absolutely necessary because they seem to be expensive.

yup it is or else it wont work,
even if it is one that will fit into a normal socket it wont work and will be dangerous!
you could get you some cfls until you save up for a ballst, they work great for all stages of growing especially seedlings

Of course you need the ballast! Yeah you will have to spend a few bucks for some quality light but it will pay off in the end. You should buy the light system off of HTG supply, get a 250, they cost 120 but worht every penny.

Picked up a 26 watt cfl, a spiral one, popped it in an old lamp I had sitting around.
Dont really have room for more lights, could maybe fit in one more cfl, but is one enough to get any results?
its produces 1750 lumens.

alright, alright!!
I changed the set up around a bit, and now I have 4 hanging from a strip plug and two more on the end of an extension cord that I have to figure out how to suspend.
But six is way better then one, and it is so bright, I need to wear sunglasses around here!
