Larger branches usually are strong enough so that actual breakage is rare. However, there are a lot of ways a plant can grow that doesn't fit with what you want. I'm talking about side branches that take up a lot of space while producing little. You can use a tomato cage for plants that are as wide as they are tall. My favorite method of taming these wayward branches is to use pipecleaners to pull the branches closer to the main stem and therefor take up less space.
