It could in a way, female plants can turn hermie and make male flowers(or a plant can be *born* a genetic hermie that will make both male and female parts and pollinate itself and the rest of the crop). So technically a male plant is not needed.

yes
simple as that, through hermaphrodites

i take it you got a few seeds but no male plants around?? - you need to check for bananas etc ASAP

Yes, as they said. hermie. bananas. If your cloning I suggest you start over if they do show seeds without males or you will always have some seeds. Some more then others....
