Why does this always happen?

Every time I attempt to top or fim my plants they develop a 3 leaf pattern and don't start developing a proper leaf set until the plants are taller than I would like them to be when I flower them. Can anyone explain why this happens and any solutions as to how I can work around this?

I dont flower anything with 3 leaves... It always ends up significantly reducing my yield. I wait it out till I have at least 5 on every leaf set. Good luck though... I know it's not a good thing cause I seem to have this problem frequently. I've managed to avoid it the last two months by not doing any kind of cutting to the plant just sending it to flowering. This time around though I got the itch to experiment and it screwed me again. It fucking frustrating and there is little to no research as to why this happens in the Grow FAQ or other forums. I'm fucking irritated:!: :cuss:

:leaf: <--- Not how my leaves look.

Ive never had a 3 leafer and I always FIM my plants so it does sound interesting. Can you tell us a bit more about your set up?

Simple 4x4 flood and drain tray and reservoir. I rooted the cuttings in rockwool under a T5 flourecent. I waited until all small cubes had significant root structure before I plugged them into bigger hugo cubes. Once I plugged them into the hugo cubes, I set them under a 400W MH. After a week I toped and use the fim technique on selected plants that were growing faster than others I had. I'm doing two strands and one grows significantly larger and I figured fimming and topping would even things out with height. The plants I fimmed... new growth is displaying a 3 leaf pattern. Now I know that over time this will correct itself once the plant gets over whatever it is it's going through, but Jesus Christ... What the fuck am I doing wrong? Noone else but me ever seems to have this problem.

It could possibly be the strains you have grown do not like to be topped or FIMed. Some strains just do not like it and will not do well once they have been done. I have never found this to be a problem for anything I have grown but maybe im just lucky .

What strains do you have?
