Angel was 13 when her mother forced her to marry and start a family. "I felt like a slave,"
she says of her childhood.

While countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and El Salvador have recently banned child marriage,
it remains legal in the US - and half of states have no set minimum age below which you cannot get married.

For the BBC's America First? series the BBC's Aleem Maqbool is exploring health
and social issues where the US, the richest country in the world,
does not perform well in international rankings.

Legal Pedophilia in the US: a True Story of Child Brides in America. If you thought this disgusting practice was limited to the 3rd world you would be dead wrong.

There are groups out there trying to fight this losing battle.

It's not only an American issue.

CHILD MARRIAGE AROUND THE WORLD
Child marriage is a truly global problem that cuts across countries, cultures, religions and ethnicities. Child brides can be found in every region in the world, from the Middle East to Latin America, South Asia to Europe.

Life expectancy played a large role in how folks formed their familial patterns. If one only expected to live to 40 years of age then it would be prudent to start a family before one turned 20.

The answer to your question is "that's the way some people are/were raised". They in turn practice the same traditions during their own lives and pass the same, however misguided, traditions down to their own kind.

In some instances I'm sure that willful and defiant youths take it upon themselves to run away in pursuit of a different life and find themselves in the clutches of a predator.
