White, "eaten away", crusty stems

Hi,

A friend of mine is having a little problem with his first grow attempt... :-?

The grow consists of 6 plants (4x blue cheese, 2x white widow) in a GT424 under a 400w (18hrs on), in a 1.25x1.25x2.00 tent. 125mm out, 100mm in (30min on / 15min off). 1x oscillating fan circulating from the floor (same cycle as light).
Temps between 20c to 28c
Humidity has been low until the last few days (after a recent humidifier addition) now between 60-70%.

EC = approx 2
Ph = approx 5.7

In week 2 of veg, all 6 plant stems have shown signs of degradation at their base. The worst example looks as if the stem has been "eaten" away.
The affected area is very dry and white in colour, with the fibres of the stem visible in the worst cases.

Otherwise the plants seem perfectly healthy.

Please see attached pics, sorry for the poor quality (crappy iPhone)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
McLovinIt.

The answer, if your friend isn't doing hydro, is the pH.

But this looks like hydroponics, and I've never seen that affliction before. It looks somewhat like a fungal problem.

PROTIP: If you're using a crappy camera phone, find ANY small magnifying lens made of glass (not plastic) and put it right on top of your lens so you can get closer pictures. It'll act like a limited-focus macro lens.

He got a mouse in the house?

Must agree with Canon - pH.

It's almost similar to what I'm going through right now with one tiny plant, 6 weeks old, three inches in height. Looks very much like a pH lock.

I'm really curious about this problem both of you hane/had. He's saying his Ph is 5.7. That's just about perfect so why would you say Ph lock?

Maybe you both have mice...lol

My friend has provided better quality pics.

Does anyone know what this is caused by?

Thanks
