I'm about to relocate and although I'd never break the law, I am curious about the suitability of some of the places I've looked at as potential grows. The grow will be no larger than 8'x8' and likely a little smaller.
Here are the basics:
First house:
Landlord: Nice guy. Investor looking to earn a living from his 10+ rental properties. Lives about 45 minutes away.
House: 3/2 with sewer and well. One floor, no basement. House is 75% buried and the only windows are on the front side of the house. By buried I mean you can step up onto the roof from the ground at the back side of the house. House is on a large wooded lot and very secluded from the neighbors (barely visible even at this time of year, not visible in spring and summer). Fairly long driveway (100 yards or so) . My one concern about this house is getting proper ventilation but I only gave it a cursory walkthrough. Ventilation is a concern because the house is buried. This is the nicest of the 3 and in the most "middle class" neighborhood. This house is a good 30% more than the others but still within my budget. I don't think it would be hard to live here a year without meeting neighbors. Central heating and air.
2nd House:
Landlord: This guy is in the military and currently hundreds of miles away. Apparently he's just been discharged so there is no telling were he will settle. I think it unlikely that he'll settle within a 100 miles of the house. He is an investor. He uses a married couple that live in one of the units to show the homes and look after things.
House: 2/1. This house is part of a 8 unit collection of homes originally built to rent as vacation properties. They are now rented out long term. The collection of properties is secluded and down a dirt road about a quarter mile long. These seem a bit lower income. I think it likely that interaction with the neighbors will occur. This house also has a well. Central heating and air.
3rd house:
landlord: local guy trying to make a buck. I didn't get the best vibe from him but that might be no big deal. He left the house unlocked (without knowing I'd be looking at it) so I was able to look a bit closer at things from a grow perspective.
House: 1/1 and all electric with a well. Very secluded down a 1/2 mile dirt road. Cheapest of the 3 (rent wise). Nice large utility closet that is close to the panel. Unlikely to meet neighbors. No central air or heat (house is heated with electric heaters at the baseboards). This house also has a strange and fairly large closet or storage area beneath the hidden stairs to the attic, this room is windowless and seems like a good spot for a grow. This is the cheapest but also the least attractive place to live. My primary concern here would be maintaining consistent temps.
All of these houses are in a very rural area that enjoys some seasonal vacationing and the police are definately small time.
