If by US you mean New York City, then yes, it's comparable. Since the Netherlands got raped by the Euro in 2002 the cost of living has gone way up.

I've been looking into moving to Euorope for quite some time, the Netherland in particular. Gaining citizenship is a whole other issue.

apart from property prices - one of the highest in Europe.

but it is a wonderful country, friendly, relaxed , tolerant, and most Dutch speak English - and do not mind doing it!

That was most likely mentioned because Vermont just decriminalized on Thursday (congrats and nice job, by the way! I'm jealous). I'm not sure I'd call that "allowed" since you still get a fine and lots of bullshit...but it's about as close as you get in the US.

Any one else have experience in amsterdam or other places with the legality of cultivation and laws

marijuana is not legal anywhere in the world and will probally never be, but decriminalized yes and thanks to NORML and all the activist and supporters everyday it gets one step closer if you know what i mean.

Actually i have to disagree there is one place that i know for sure it is legal to grow and sell and smoke marijuana, because I just returned from there. The place im talking about is Jamaica! But let me clarify , there is only one area on the island this is legal and it was where Bob Marley grew up. Its called Mount Zion. If any of you get the chance to go there , dont pass it up cause its a once in a lifetime thing.We took the Bob Marley tour and people were literally passing huge buds threw the bus windows and giving free samples out .Yes I really do hope heaven is like this but till then i will be visiting Jamaica many more times. Actually just started my grow yesterday from some seeds i happened to ship back with me. Check out some of the youtube videos , if noone believes me ,cause ive seen a few where the tour guide light up a doobie with the rest of the tourist. It was a great experiance to get to smoke a fat joint going through Bob Marley home and then get to touch his mosoleum , where he is buried. let me know if you wanna know anything about the place.
