When to top plant?

They will recover in a day or two. Topping takes a bit out of them and then they spring back. But you should really look at a topping and fiming tuturial. You can do both. They both help to make the canopy more even and produce more bud sites.

Let it grow. If you are going to top and fim a lot it is a good idea to use a silica suplement. It helps them rebound faster from abuse :). It is usually a pretty cheap supplement too. I got a quart of the GH stuff for less than 20 bucks canadian. And you need about 2 ml per gallon so it lasts a long time.

Do you actually think silica does anything in soil?

I top mine as soon as possible usually. I have found that 4 colas (cropping twice) works best for me in closet grow as can usually keep em under 4 feet by harvest. Each of the three shown have been cropped twice and one on left taller than I usually like but each will produce 4 colas.

Oops, two on right have only been cropped once....will crop again any day now.

Never top your plant before 3 weeks.
I only top when I know I'm going to have a height issue (Sativa dom strain), as topping slows down the growth considerably, and in most cases is not worth it, in my opinion.
I like single dominant colas, not those puny twins that topping give you.
Good luck on your grow

That plant is 10 weeks old?
Don't touch it anymore, it is had the shit kicked out of it seems.
All you can do now is be patient, and be nice to your plant.
No more stress.

I used to be a no crop guy in late 90's (I was a purist). Many hybrids (not just sativas) easily can grow 5+ feet in 5 gal buckets. If ya got the room then great! But 5+ feet in a closet doesn't work and hard to get penetration to lower bud sites. Cropping barely shocks and I always see new growth in a matter of days. Only reason I crop now is so I can hang my fancy pants lights above em and easier to focus light and better reflection off my elastomeric painted walls.

And the best part about cropping is, "clones"!

And I actually finish cropping twice in a 30 day veg at 24hr light so no shocking at flower stage as I only veg 30 days at 24 hr light. I have some Maui just went over 3 feet at 4 weeks in flower....last pic...about a week old so bigger now.

A big single cola is a beauty to behold and I do miss that but don't miss the mold that often came within the center of a 4"-5" diameter single cola.

I just don't bother topping.
If the plant get's too tall, which really hardly ever happens to me, I just tie it down.
This is my last grow, no topping and the tallest plant was 5.5'.
All the others were 3-4' without topping, had nice big fat colas, so I just don't top anymore.
Too each their own

SWEET!

You must have a high ceiling? 4' would be pushing it for me but I have a closet shelf to deal with and my light can't do closer than 17" without bleaching. Use 3-4 gal pot? Used to do the natural no cropping etc. but not practical with most led's lack of penetration.
