How do you tell when a plant is ready for this? Any tips? I'm a first timer, all advice is much appreciated

Using the tops as cones is a great idea, how do you do that? Just cut at an angle and apply rooting hormone?Depends on your preference as a gardener. I like to use my "tops" as clones. So I tend to wait a little longer than some. Plus I want to make sure I have a couple of good shoots below to turn into the new tops.
How old are your plants? Soil? Lighting?
Thank you for the link, very helpful
Your welcome Sir, glad I could help.Using the tops as cones is a great idea, how do you do that? Just cut at an angle and apply rooting hormone?
They are 6 weeks old, soil is 50% organic potting soil with 50% perlite and some hydrocorrals. Light is a 400 w HPS but it was run on 275 for a couple weeks during the day for temperature control reasons. Here is a picture from a couple days ago. I have tied it down for LST. I guess one thing I am confused about this procedure is when a plant is tied like this, how do you know which part of the plant to top? Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks for the reply

wait until its half the size you want it to finish atHow many more weeks should I wait until I flip this plant to flower?
so I should scrog it now? I only want it about 2.5 feet tall. It does look like there are so many branches early on so it will likely be short anyways.wait until its half the size you want it to finish at
if you screen it, veg for another 2-3 weeks to fill the screen outso I should scrog it now? I only want it about 2.5 feet tall. It does look like there are so many branches early on so it will likely be short anyways.
