This is my first time growing. I have the light close and keep it on all the time. When should i switch to a 12/12 cycle?

Can someone explain more? If he has 2 feet of grow area left, at what point should he switch to 12/12 without "overgrowing" his space?

if his plant is 12" tall now, he may be O K in that area. a plant will double and some times triple in size during flower.

You can switch to 12/12 basically anytime you want. Just know when you enduce flowering, your plants will have a growth surge and double in size and maybe even bigger.
Lots of different factors to consider: light, temp, growroom size, nutes, container size, strain etc... The more info you feed us, the better we can answer.
