When a plant absorbs a homogenous solution, can it exclude certain compounds?

Now, before you just call me a retarded troll, let's think about this.

I know that most of you, like myself, have at some point in your lives participated in an experiment where you take a rose and let it absorb a solution of water and colored die. Within a day or two, the rose will start to turn the color of the die. Although, I've only ever seen this experiment done with fresh cut roses. In which case, I'd put fresh cut colas into the solution. Similarly, if you put bleach or table salt in the water, it'll most likely kill the plant. I'm assuming that the plant just absorbs the solution and takes what it needs, regardless of what's in it. So how does a plant dispose of waste? Mind you, I haven't been in school for a long time and I smoke a lot of weed, so what I did learn, I've probably forgotten. Forgive me.

The idea: I'm wondering if I were to take some opium bulbs and make a mild tea out of them and added it to the reservoir, what exactly would happen? I would assume that the plant would absorb the solution as usual, take what it needs, and dispose of the rest, but where does it go? Would the molecular structure remain the same? I don't think the plant would have any reason to waste energy breaking down opium if it's not going to use it. Would it just be sent to the leaf tips like the red dye? As long as the opium molecule is there, you can get high off of it, but I'm wondering whether or not it'll even end up in the plant. As long as it's not toxic, I don't see how it could hurt. The same way you can add pineapple, grape, coconut, and other flavored molasses solutions to the plant for flavoring, I'm sure there's more that can be done. This isn't really something I want/plan to do, but it's tickling my curiosity bone. I'd never waste perfectly good opium bulbs like that.

If you want more just ask and I can go into specifics. :D

Keep it green. Peace.
