Good afternoon. I'm doubting the soil is poor quality. My view is no drainage. Over water and nute build up as a result. I see mixed signs that only correlate when applied to wet roots and the toxicity it induces. But what do I know? LOL.
looks like fox farm garbage or cheap soil with perlite
 
Still $17/bag here. I share your sentiment though. Not allowed on my property any longer. Not the thing it was.
i like the concept of fox farm but their soils are just all over the map. bugs contamination soil too hot. too expensive
new growers tend to be fooled by using soil with nutrients in it because they think itll be easier. then they plant seedlings or small clones into it and burn them. then they think its a nute problem and feed more complicating the original issue further

Build my own now. Vastly superior and consistent. Oddly still looks like poor soil. LMAO. I may even have OP's planter in this pic. LOL.

And I concede to your point. Poor soil for newer growers. 006.jpg
