whats up with these strain names ?

Alright I'm pretty blitzed right now and was wondering about some strain names... Why do they call skunk Skunk #1 Instead of just skunk ? Is there a #2 out there ? And what about northern lights #5. I've heard of NL and NL #5 but never 2 3 or 4... Whatsup with tht ?

actually, yah, there is a skunk number two and a few others as well, same with the nl's.. i think nl goes up to something like nl number 9 or some crap like that..

damn really ? How come u NEVER EVER hear about any of the other NLs besides #1 + #5 and u only hear bout skunk #1

thats because the ones you hear about are the more popular and better of the bunch.. and i think most of the others are mainly used in crosses and stuff like that..

my homie has some skunk#2
i think each number represents the pheno type or the pheno of the generation it came from or something like this.
someone should correct me tho, if i'm wrong.

the higher the number the more inbred its been to bring out specific characteristics i.e skunk no2 may have a stronger skunkier smell than skunk no1, it may also represent stability, dont hold me to it tho.
