They would fight each other for space, and end up small, lanky, and starving...

Yes, even if fed properly. When you feed, you use a certain concentration of nutes. Generally, that concentration goes to one plat. Now you have 2 plants in the same pot, so each plant really only get half the nutrients as opposed to the amount they would get in one pot by themselves.
Put it this way, if you were in a small space, you would have only so much air to breath and food to eat and water to drink. Now add another person in that room with you, you now only have half of the air, water, and food hence, you will be hungy, weak and tired...
