What size of grow room will a 1000 W high-pressure sodium cover?

I have a 9 x 7 flower room, which I know is under lighted, and I was wondering how much light my 1000 W HPS should really cover? I did a little math and it was a 6.5 x 6 .5 square. Is this correct? I plan on putting more lighting in, but it would be only about 750 W of supplemental florescent lighting. First however; I have to purchase the 1000 W MH for my vegetation room so I can pull my fluorescence. My main problem is, that I need to increase production in my flower room, without increasing light at this time. I have placed my plants at different levels in the flower room so that the plants are getting more light on their sides now. I turn them about one quarter turn in day, until they get trained into a certain spot with the flower showing mostly on one side. So here's the question again. If I have a 9 x 7 flower room how many watts do I need to cover the entire room? My guess is about 3000? That's a good sized electric bill!
 
If you want the most coverage for a 1000 you need to go unvented then maybe 6x6 top for coverage.
I have run larger air cooled hoods like the magnum they will go 5x5 but its not as intense as the ideal 4x4 for a air cooled hood.
 
The hood is air cooled by a 425 cfm exhast fan, You can literally put your hand on the glass and it's barley warm. Unvented you mean no hood?
 
A 4x4 or 5x5 footprint means I would need another 1000watts? It's getting late I'll check in tomorrow. Thanks
 
The ideal set up with that would be 4 -750 or 1000 watt sodiums or you could do 2 1000 s air cooled in magnum reflectors for a 9x 5 area leaving some walking room
 
for that full space you have, use two 1000w you wont be sad in the long run

one 1000w i do a 4x4 and barley seem to get enough coverage after some veg time
 
Yah I agree with dookz. I run a 1000w in a XXXL hood no glass in a 4x4 tent. With a big girl the light barely penetrates or reaches around. If I was you I would just go the other way with your lighting idea. Id keep the flouros in veg and just pull the 1000w mh in the flower tent for mixed spectrum and full coverage or just run 2 CMH bulbs. That's some dough there though. lol.
 
i have always been heard that a 600w is ideal for a 4x4 room......i run a 1000w in a 4x6 room and seems to work just fine. my 400w in my 3x3 seems a little over excessive.......have you busted out a light meter yet? i would for sure say 2x 1000w would work good but where you have a odd shaped room maybe 2 more 600w lights would be more ideal so you can have more light placement options.
 
My flower room is 8x6 and I'm running 2 1000hps's and 1 400hps all in maverick super wide air cooled reflectors. If heat wasnt an issue I still could use another light or bump the 400 up to 1000.
 
Put your 1000 on a light rail light mover. You wont regret it.

Well i have an 8x8 with x2 1000watters and to be honest it could use another.so in your case id say 3 or 4000 watts in a 9x7 area. good luck and happy growing

Not really man. If you need a ballast a bulb and an air cooled hood I doubt you could do it much cheaper than this.

Not to mention if you double the light you will also double the electrical cost and bulb replacement cost.
Heat may be of minimal concern depending on your setup, but your heat will also double.

not to run. I Love my movers. Once you learn how to use em. they will add another 30% to your yield w/no extra monthly expense.

i've got two of the intellidrive 3.5s I've been using one for probably seven years total the other around 5. When I have to replace them I am going with a little sturdier design as these tend to slip a little. Also the guide rollers do not hold up so well when carrying a big hood like the xxxls. Overall they are solid tho. and a good investment for a newbie. I really like how you can adjust the stop times at the end of the run. Allowing extra soak time on the ends of your room.
