HI JDM Love. I live in the South and trying to start some seeds for the garden also. Its still a little to cold to get them to sprout. The medium I'm using just isn't warm enough. To start seeds your growing medium needs to be 70 degrees to 80. If the medium isn't warm enough the seeds want sprout.

It looks like CA is all Zone 8 or up on the gardening hardiness map. I'd say if it's not getting below freezing you're good to plant anything.

Some types of flowers (columbines, hollyhocks, etc.) require whats called stratification (a cold season to help the seeds germinate) this can be done by putting the seeds in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 weeks before planting.

It's called "hardening off". Some plants if put out into direct sun will fry and die. :(

I hate driving in the summer and people have shade houseplants on their porches frying in the sun. It makes me sad.

yea i read that somewhere that when you put the plants outside to leave them in the shade a few days then move them slowly into the sun so they dont get shocked or something like that
