What kind of yoga is best?

I'd love to try yoga and there are so many studios throwing their shingle up. How can I find a reputable one? What should I look for? (can't ask for recs as I don't know anyone who practices yoga)

I want to build muscle if possible and maintain flexibility. (I'm quite flexible so don't know if that has any bearing on yoga style)

No hot yoga for me thanks

Not as interested in the meditative part (though I'm sure it's part of it) more interested in the strength building part.

Thanks peeps

I Really like Ashtanga Yoga. David Swanston? Swiston? Swisseton? Something. Anywho, I downloaded a couple of his videos. One of them is like 2 hours in one session, it's intense. You hold positions for 5 breaths a lot of the time, which takes awhile. LOTS of sun salutations. DS is also a maniac and does these crazy handstands INBETWEEN every exercise. I don't do all those things, but it's the video that taught me how to headstand, which I think is pretty neat.

If going to a studio, I usually prefer "power yoga" which means you move around a lot more and you're not holding a position for a minute. I've also done Ashtanga yoga at studios.

Gentle yoga is too slow for me, but for beginners it's probably good. And the olds seem to like it.

p 90X has an intense yoga tape/ video. I had an instructor do a version of that once, and my ass fucking KILLED after. Not from anal, you big perv, just lots of squats.

I love hot yoga. It's my jam! But my bestie got a migraine her first time and doesn't like it. Not for everyone. But it's great if you live in a place that's cold as balls like thunder bay.

Also - yoga pants are the tits. The lulu lemon ones are $$$$$. I usually buy myself a pair as a treat after reaching some goal. And they make your ass look like it's from outer space.

Happy Yoga-ing!!!

Thanks Yess,

I've done the crazy P90x crap. Not the yoga though. It doesn't have to be super intense, but def. strength building. I can do a headstand and hold if for days, would that give me a discount? ;-p

I want a space ass. Will look into the LULU pants. I just though they were $ B/c the brand. Didn't know they actually lifted and separated…

And @Chester da Horse : why do I have to be into the third eye shit? I said not so much emphasis on that, I didn't say NONE of it….

Oh so you headstand and jazz?

Headstand for days?

That's awesome! Was that from gymnastics or something? I only ask because yoga taught me head standing.

what are your goals? more strength, more flexibility, both....

a good studio should offer some reduced rates for you to check them out, if they are worth a shit they will do it because they know they will hook you once you see how they operate.

sorry if this is all a repeat didnt read anything but the OP...

I joined a yoga club last year. I got kicked out the first week..apparently then want you to actually join in and not just hang out in the back watching and taking pictures..WTF..that wasn't in the membership agreement..

yoga is meant to be a spiritual, mental and psychical discipline and practice.
yoga, tai-chi etc are specifically meant to create a mind, body soul impact, they arent just a work out

if youre seriously not into that aspect of it try finding a studio that does a yoga mix type work out that doesnt focus on the meditation part, depending where you live im sure you can find one. there is almost always a meditation aspect of yoga and it isnt a short one,
alternatively you could buy some home practices and skip the meditation part

ive done yoga for years, and usually the meditation part rounds to be about 5-10 mins at the end of it and 5-10 mins in the beginning.
