What kind of Soil should I use to grow?

I plan on getting my soil. But when I go to the store what kind of soil should I ask for?

I haven't used many different ones but I did find that miracle grow accualy holds water better than my local organic soil. But im just using natural soil.

Don't ask for soil, use the FAQ and the threads on this site to determine what the best soil (or mix) is and where to get it. No need drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

I recommend a mix; its a good way to supplement nutrients for the beginning stages of growth and allows for good drainage properties, water retention, a buffer for soil pH, and an increased amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash not found in traditional bagged soils.

I'm using peat moss, perlite, worm castings, blood meal, building sand and dolomite lime. That is one of dozens of appropriate soil mixtures you will find throughout this forum. Find one that suits your needs, and dont forget to check the pH of the soil before you plant.

fox farm ocean forest blend is expensive (20 bucks for 1.5 cubic feet or about 11 gallons) but its got all the good stuff in there and plants love it (so ive heard, my plants seem to like it too). if you cant afford that, just get some organic soil and perlite and the stuff that The Dude 4452 said above. you can find it at all your local hydro stores.

Holy crap, thats double what i pay for foxs farms!! Demand that who ever is selling you that stuff take the stick out their ass and stop ripping you off.
A lot of ppl dont have access to a hydro store, so if i were cut off from such a place(im not btw i have two in my town) i would just get some run of the mill nothing special organic soil and a bag of perlite. Mix one bag of perlite per bag of soil and you will have excellent drainage properties. Also you really dont need all that fancy stuff the dude was talking about. most premixed soil will have a sufficent amount of amendment for your plant to be as healthy as it could be. Dont believe the hype!

You dont need it, but then again you dont need fox farms or perlite or anything but rain water and dirt to grow it in (after all, its a weed thats been growing without human intervention for thousands of years). The extra ingredients are meant to supplement the plant with nutrients that are scientifically proven to improve life, health, foliage, and other plant processes. Sure you don't need them, but all of the things I listed above only cost me $35 and thats enough soil mix to last for a few future grows, not to mention the ideal growing conditions and nutrient/mineral supplementation granted by a soil mix.

damn, i knew that should be too expensive! i only have 2 hydro shops around here though... they both have fox farms for 20 bucks! i agree, you dont need it, but then again they is the saying you get what you pay for. with all that good stuff your bud may be better. who knows, maybe it is too much of a hype, im not saying your wrong, im just saying i had the money, heard fox farm was great, and wanted to make my grow semi decent.

its up to you though man, if you have the money and can find some good priced fox farm, id say do it, people and plants love it! and dont forget your perlite... drainage is a must!

I am using 82 ltr bags of pro-mix potting soil... a lot of people on here swear by this brand, only $11 a bag, somes mixed with perlite, sand, polymer crystals, and a bunch of other stuff... with a ph around 6.5

so if i walk into home depot and go to the potting soils there will be one that says organic mix on the bag?

I use a 50/50 mix of Ocean Forest & Happy Frog.

P.S. $20 is nothing to get a nice return. I just pulled 8oz+ from each one of these beauties. All for 15gal of dirt!

I use Fox Farms also. By the time you buy everything to make a good mix your spending about the same as Fox farms. I do not think you could make your own fox farm like mix for 15$ a bag. To me Fox farms soil and there ferts with the chart is simple. I like simple.

Black gold & Perlite is my 2nd choice I would tell you if you have no grow shops. Sold at most stores.

I pay 16$ a bag for OF

17g pot FF OF soil with 35% perlite. PH adjusted water. Still have weeks to go

i cant wait to grow a plant that fat 5150. i bet you get 6-8 ozers off it.

Miracle grow moisture control potting mix is what I would use.

i bought a pallet of fox farms this year man it was expensive but cheaper in bulk!

I used miracle gro organic soil mixed with bone meal, blood meal, pearlite because miracle gro organic potting mix is horrible on its own. I used fish and seaweed fertilizer in this mix as well. It definitely helped to boost the overall yield and slightly increased speed of growth. The fox farm soil is amazing for health, growth without their soil nutrients big bloom, tiger bloom and grow big. Hopefully when the fox farm plants fully mature they will have great yields especially the ones that are using soil fertilizers. Overall this soil is pretty good but there is nothing like adding your own home made compost.

If i start with fox farm forest.. What would i need to fertilize throughout the growth? Thanks
