What is this?

It looks a lot like my young plum tree, what does the main stem look like near the soil? If its got a big bulge just above the soil, it's a safe bet that it's a grafted fruit tree of some kind
Yeah my dad said it might be a fruit tree of some kind but I can't remember what he said, he wasn't sure neither. I'll take a look when im next there!

I had a look just now and there's just a few main stems shooting out but no noticeable bulge unfortunately!
 
Def not Cornus species as all dogwoods, even the shrubby ones, have opposite leaves.
Looks like rose family to me...if you had a flower or fruit it'd be easier to ID....I posted a pic of Photinia at first bc of the red new growth but I've changed my mind...don't think it's Photinia now...they just look a little similar.

Check it with online images in Google. Be sure to denote location such as N Cal. You can also find IDs at state ag extension sites. First see if it has wooden root. That denotes annual from perennial.
