unsulphered molasses, or high brix, you can get it at hydroponics.net for pretty cheap, its sugar for your plant, helps with a lot of things, yield, and a few other things

if you get molasses then make sure you get Black Strap, it's a type of molasses. It has a bunch of trace elements and carbs and sugar. It doesn't really help your plant, your plant only absorbs about 15% of the sugar from it. What it really helps is your soil. All those sugars and carbs and trace elements feed the micro organisms living in a symbiotic relationship with your roots. The happier your micro organisms and micro bacteria and fungus' are, the happier your plant will be. 1tbsp per gallon is a good amount, don't use more than that.

Yep, about 1 tblsp per gallon should be plenty. Just like nutes a little bit goes a long way. Also when using molasses make sure you flush every other watering or every now and then. You don't want your roots getting all gunked up with anything that didn't absorb into the soil.

The mineral makeup of molasses is below and the numbers are from a 100 gram sample or 5 tablespoons. That doesn't mean a whole lot because the percentages in red would be the same regardless of weight.

  • Calcium ----- 205 mg .205%
  • Iron ------------ 4.7 mg .0047%
    Magnesium --- 242 mg .242%
  • Phosphorus ---- 31 mg .031%
  • Potassium --- 1464 mg 1.464%
  • Sodium ------ -----37 mg .037%
  • Zinc --------------0.3 mg .0003%
  • Copper ------ --0.5 mg .0005%
  • Manganese --- 1.5 mg .0015%
  • Selenium ---- 17.8 mcg .0178%

Personally, if I saw a fertilizer on the shelves with those percentages listed in red, I'd pass for something more useful. And keep in mind that the numbers in black are 5 times the amount of molasses that anyone suggests using per gallon. Plants have a limited ability to pull up sugars from the soil so the 'sugars' are more for the microbes if you're running them and even then, you'd have to be an organic grower running microbes to see any possible benefit from the sugar additions.

If you are running hydro I could see not wanting to add molasses to your water, because it can gunk things up fast if your not careful. If you are growing in soil, it can only benefit you. If you are growing organic or not, there are still micro organisms that live in your soil that have a symbiotic relationship with your roots. You might not realize your feeding them, but you are. Most nutes have molasses in it, they just don't list it as that. Do what ever works for you though.

Most thrifty gardeners I know use Grandma's from the grocery store. The important thing is to make sure it is unsulphered.
