I started this crop and I have been using purified and deionized water and a wetting agent. Anybody doing the same?
The wet agent is supposed to reduce the tension surface of the water allowing to overcome the water repellence of the soil and avoiding the soil to become hydrophobic. Fact is, organic matter and potting soil are likely to become hydrophobic. This can cause a built up of mineral salts in the soil and a poor absorption of fertilisers and water.
I water my plant as needed using the weight technique. After researching on the matter and regarding the feed, it seems that fertilisers have a better chance to mix with the water in a more uniform way when using a wetting agent. Due to its higher "leaching capacity" it also fight the built of excess of mineral into the soil leading to toxicity.
Anyway all this is theory, in practice I observed that no bubble of water remain on the surface of the dry soil when watering. As time goes by, it seems that the soil stays moist longer and in a uniform way. My plants look healthy with a strong stem. See the picture, this plant was grown from seed (purple white) and is only 4 weeks old (since germination). I also can see that when mixing the wetting agent, the ph step up a point. I use a ph down to bring the water to 6. I also analysed the water that drain and the Ph is stable.
I wonder if someone else has conducted the same experiment ...
