Hey Everyone,

New here and new to growing. I'm going to give as much detail about my set-up to see how some Pro's think I'm doing and then I will need an answer on a quick question about mulching. Please Note: I have done 100+ hours on this forum and other plus YouTube before planting, so I feel I didnt jump in this blind but maybe I did and your feedback would be welcomed.

Location:
- I'm located in Michigan, USA and my grow room is located at my home which is about 20 miles from where I'm living right now (living with my girlfriend). I do not have the ability to visit my grow room everyday but in this beginning phase have been over there every 2-3 days which will be average. Closet growing in Miracle Grow soil and the reason I'm growing is for a medical alternative for a chronic condition my girlfriend has been having. I have a decent amount of experience growing vegetables/fruits in the garden but we have both NEVER grown or smoked cannabis.

Set-Up:
- Closet grow room roughly 2 ft x 2.5 ft and 4.5-5 ft high, walls all painted flat white, floor covered with a white sheet and a piece of painted white plywood on top. Seed were bought from NirvanaShop.com and I've got 4 seedlings (2 Wonder Woman/2 ?? Strain Freebies) roughly 5 days old, just starting their second sets of serrated leaves and roughly 2 inches high. Seedlings are in started pots about 1 quart in size. I've got 2 36w CFLs about 1-2 inches from leaves and a 150w HPS about 8-10 inches from the tops of the leaves. 3 6-inch oscillating fans; 1 blowing across tops of seedlings on low, 1 blowing on the HPS unit, and 1 pulling intake air and blowing across my "Humidity" set-up and HPS system. Exhaust hole up-top to let out hot/used air. Light cycle is 20/4 and Temps ranging from low 60s at night to low 80s during the day, room is very 'Light-Tight' due to a double door feature I made. Humidity ranging from 25%-45% which we will talk about next.

Humidity Problem/Solution:
- My home is heated by a Natural Gas/Forced Air furnace which completely burns the moisture out of the air in the winter (It is snowing right now, which is awesome!!!!..........NOT). What I did to combat this was keep a wide shallow pan filled with water in the grow room. I also have a deeper container filled with water and stapled a dish rag to the wall with 3-4 inches submerged in the container to allow it to suck moisture up through the rag and it has been working so far. This is also where i have a fan blowing across it to hopefully distribute the moisture throughout the room.

Nutes:
- I have Nutes that I wont be using until 3-4 weeks into the grow. I have a veg/tomato granular fertilizer that is 10-10-10 and i have Miracle Grow Blooming/Flowering fertilizer that is 2-4-2. I'm thinking of just going with the Miracle Grow because it is water soluble whereas the Tomato fertilizer is granular/pellet for a slow release throughout the grow season.

Mulching Question:
- I know from growing vegetables that mulch is GREAT at keeping in moisture and allowing the soil to stay a more uniformed temp/moisture content. I also know it help keep out disease and bacteria and will help me go a little longer without watering if for some reason i cant make it out to my grow room. So here is what i did and i dont know if it was a bad or good idea. I cut up a bunch of cardboard cubes roughly 1cm x 1 cm and put a layer or two on top of the soil up to the lip of the container, covering all exposed soil to air and sunlight (HPS/CFL). It looks great and seems like it will work but will this backfire on me. Like I said, i'm a complete Noob but have not found anything addressing or suggesting this type of idea on any forum.

Please give me all the feedback possible and sorry no pictures at this time. I'm going for a faster growth, NOT high yield growth. I will probably not be doing any LST or Scrog this time around, and will only top the plants once and veg for 30-40 days before flower.

THANKS!!!

i think you need to chill about all this water stuff i water every 5-7 days so if you go every 2-3 days then you dont need to hold the water in. If you go to far on holding water in you could end up hurting the plant roots need air and water

The only reason for all the worry is because the first couple days, it was so dry that within the day the soil went from well saturated to extremely dry and the soil turned like concrete.

there is an awsome organic thread on this site...they would be more informative as to mulching and soil amending /so on....good luck!
