Weird leaf texture, yellow striping.

Hey everyone,

I am trying to identify and fix an issue with my plants before they start flowering. I was hoping some with more knowledge can help since this is my second grow ever.

The bottom leafs are yellowing and kinda striped looking. Some of the older shade leafs also have this weird "paper like" texture, some of them have been like that the whole grow. All of the upper and newer growth seems fine. I can show pics of the whole plant if needed. I think slugs have been getting some of the bottom leafs too. I've looked for other bugs with the loupe, but haven't found anything.

It's an outdoor grow started from seed. I used Kelloggs Patio Plus for most of the soil. I did add some compost, chicken manure and a decent amount of sphagnum peat moss (I know the peat moss was a mistake and I did not add lime either... this part of my problem huh? Though I have been adding some lime in the last few waterings). Water is tap water with one of those charcoal hose filters from Amazon. I have also watered with some compost teas and added Mycorrhizal. Compost was added as a top dressing 2 weeks ago.

I haven't fed too much of anything for most of the grow. I've primarily just used some organic Kelloggs fertilizer (top dressed two or 3 times so far). I know they're getting really hungry, but I think there's other issues going on too.

So what do you guys think?

Possible thrip problem...not 100% sure though, but look it up and compare and use a strong zoom loop...the bastards are tiny...lol

I looked at some pictures of thrips and symptoms (never heard of these before), and yes, much of it looks very identical.

So I started looking really hard at a freshly cut leaf and I'll be damned, I found a little bastard walking around. Not positive it was a thrip though, I need to look into this more.

Thanks Mak'er. This gives me something to go on.

I share your pain...just found a few myself on 2 of my plants the other day, but with so few I'm hoping not to have to chop things down like I had to when I had spider mites...those buggers are worse...direct spawns of satan himself...lol
Best of luck on killing yours. :)

Ladybugs will make short work of them. If indoor even faster. If outdoor place a Netting over it if you can. I have many times fixed thrips and aphids with this method. Put as many as you can grab in there. I am fortunate for whatever reason they love my father's garage so I can get em like on tap lol.

Yeah, I found another one. Definitely a thrip. Although I'm not seeing them in large numbers right now. I did spray neem the other day for the first time in several weeks.

I'm getting lady bugs after work tomorrow, I have neem oil (have barely used it though) and I ordered some Montery spray with Spinosad.

Any other and/or different recommendations?

I read those sticky paper trap things work well too...or at least they catch the buggers trying to fly away...lol
