apparently yesterday morning, we shot a 79 million dollar rocket at the moon...to see if any water would be found in the debris from the impact of the explosion

how reckless & unnecessary

glad to see we've got our priorities straight, like always

It would have been jettisoned into space, anyway. It's not like they go and retrieve those things. So, technically, they REPURPOSED a satellite that was at the end of its mission. Not wasteful at all. Jettisoning it into space would have been wasteful, when it clearly could have served another purpose.

This kind of thinking always bothers me. Scientific endeavors and space exploration in particular are always causes worthy of funding. The mindset you have has held us back for decades now and has caused us to lose the scientific edge we once had. $79 millions dollars is a grain of sand in the Sahara compared to what the US government spends in a single week.

To be fair, $79 million was the cost of the LCROSS itself (not the cost of colliding with the moon). LCROSS served a purpose other than simply crashing into the moon. That mission was complete, so they decided to repurpose the satellite instead of simply allowing it to float around in space for an eternity.

I was watching some fat guy on Fox News interview Buzz Aldrin about the LCROSS mission. Not surprisingly, the Fox guy kept trying to spin it as "ridiculous" and a "waste of money", while Buzz was trying (in vain) to explain to him why it was neither ridiculous nor a waste of money (all the while, the Fox guy is smirking, making me want to slap that smug look off his face, as if Buzz is some crazy old geezer who doesn't know what he's talking about).

Anyway, if you ask me, there are people who will never be satisfied. If we completely ended our space missions and allowed other nations to outpace us in terms of technology, etc, they STILL wouldn't be happy. Not that I think we should do that to appease the spendthrifts who think space exploration is a waste of time and resources, just saying that if we DID, they would just find something else to be pissed off about.
