Watering for Vacation

If someone had plants in flowering and was going on vacation for ten days, what would be the best way to keep them watered if there was no person available to tend the plants? The plants in this example are in soil with one gallon pots. Is there an inexpensive way to MacGyver a drip system? Would the plants be okay with a hearty watering the day of the trip?

If you put the plants in a spot that will be shady and cooler all day long then they might be okay, assuming they are outdoors but 10 days is really pushing it for a flowering plant.. Im pretty sure there are some pretty inexpensive simple drip systems out on the market, my stepmom has these mushroom things that you fill up with water then stick in the dirt near the root ball and it SLOWLY drips water out the bottom. I don't like to use em cause I am afraid it will damage the roots but I honestly doubt it will do enough damage to where it shows and if you need a quick solution then it may be necessary to try

Thanks for the feedback. I guess a hearty watering and one of those drip thingamajiggers would be okay in a pinch. Any idea what it is called or who manufactures it?

I have to travel often and have been looking into using Self Irrigating Pots (SIP), there are a bunch of DIY guides on Youtube and the forums. Not sure how well they work, since I did not complete mine. They also have some pre-built at HD.

hey i think i know what to do

1.pray that it will rain.

2.tell your government that they need to do a cloud seeding because you will be going on a vacation and no one will water your plants.

3. (this is the best way) Email MacGyver or text or call him to make you a dripping system. or you can give me a cash to go there and i will be the one to water it, don't forget to give me salary, plus food and drinks, since i am not able to apply for my job training yet.

just kidding. sorry for spamming.

That was very clever.

You can make a wicking system to water it. Google has the details, but it's a simple system consisting of a piece of gauze and a container of water. You'll want to reduce the lighting, this will reduce water requirements. Also, soak it thoroughly the day of departure, or the night before.

Put a the bucket in a bucket without holes thus bigger than plant bicker water until there's an extra 3 inches of water in big bucket nand the soul wil pull the water through hoes as needed and should be gone by time u come back
