hey, i recently sparked a interest in growing hydro, and i dont know nothing about it, im used to the old school method growing in soil thats all i know how to do and im pretty good at it, but i wana go hydro i was looking at all the different setups and its all chinese to me maybe someone could help me out. i want to set up a nice 6 pot system, thats the easiest to grow, maintain and to build (i plan on doing it myself). my question is what setup should i use i was thinking of the ebb and flow system. i dont understand how it works where do all the roots go. can someone please help teach me about this system and how i could build and maintain it for cheap o and btw i could only grow as much as a 400w mh / hps will let me.

Ebb n flow is the easiest system to set up and maintain. Depending on which method you go with (tray or bucket) roots are not exposed to light. The tray method utilizes 4'' rockwool cubes which are inserted into an inert media such as hydroton; which fills the tray and gives the roots room to expand. In the bucket style system, net pots are used and are filled with inert media such as hydroton. Seedlings or clones are grown in rockwool cubes. Roots hang down in the buckets which have been made light-proof.

The tray method uses only 1 pump and usually the reservoir is placed directly beneath the tray itself. The bucket method uses two pumps and a "control" bucket which regulates the water level in the rest of the buckets.

I am personally using the bucket method, but that is because I had most of the materials on hand. I also live in an apartment, so having a 3x3' ebb n flow tray and reservoir delivered to my unit was not feasible. There aren't any hydro shops within hundreds of miles for me, so it was necessary that I order much of my materials through the interweb.

If I could have gone with the ebb n flow tray system, I would have. However, the bucket system does work. The link in my signature shows step by step instructions on how to make a similar system. Do whatever works for you man.
